Smudging and Sacred Medicines

June 1 • Day 1• peyak • ᐯᔭᐠ

Smudging is a sacred ceremony practiced by many Indigenous peoples that involves the burning of traditional medicines to create a cleansing smoke. The four sacred medicines—sage, cedar, sweetgrass and tobacco—are gifts from the land and are used for their spiritual, cultural and healing significance. During a smudge, the smoke is gently guided over a person or space to cleanse the mind, body and spirit, and to carry prayers to the Creator. This practice reflects a deep respect for balance, connection and well-being, and continues to be an important part of Indigenous traditions and ways of knowing.
