Three ECSD School Projects Move to Design Stage

July 9, 2026

Three future Edmonton Catholic school spaces are one step closer to becoming a reality.

Following a Government of Alberta announcement on July 9, 2026 three Edmonton Catholic Schools projects will move to the design stage.

Two new Catholic high schools and one K-9 replacement school will move into the design stage. This phase allows each project to be fully developed as part of the provincial capital planning process.

These future schools are expected to create space for approximately 4,500 students and will help respond to continued enrolment growth across Edmonton.

Over the past three years, Edmonton Catholic Schools has welcomed nearly 7,000 additional students. Many schools, particularly at the high school level, are currently over capacity.

“As our communities grow, so does the need for spaces where students can learn and thrive. Moving these projects to the design stage is an important milestone, and we are grateful to the Government of Alberta for continuing to address the needs of our students and families,” shared Board Chair Sandra Palazzo.

Projects Advancing to Design

These projects will support families in growing communities across west, southeast, and north Edmonton:

New Catholic High School – Lewis Farms (Grades 10-12)

This new high school will serve up to 1,800 students and support growing West Edmonton communities. It will help relieve pressure at St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School and will be located near the new Lewis Farms community recreation centre.

New Catholic High School – The Meadows (Grades 10-12)

Serving approximately 1,800 students, this new high school will support growth in Southeast Edmonton and help relieve pressure at Holy Trinity Catholic High School. The school will be located next to the Meadows Recreation Centre and serve students in the communities of The Meadows and Silver Berry.

K–9 Replacement School – Oxford (K–9)

This project will replace St. Lucy Catholic Elementary School and continue to serve families in north Edmonton. The new K–9 school will be located near 165 Avenue and 130 Street and will support expanded access to Catholic junior high programming, including the first Catholic junior high north of 132 Avenue.

Earlier this year, families shared feedback through a visioning session and questionnaire. The project is now moving into the next phase, where that input will help inform the detailed design of the new school.

St. Lucy School will remain open and continue serving students until a new school is built.

Together, these projects will support students and families across west, southeast, and north Edmonton.

About the Design Phase

During the design stage, detailed plans are developed for each school, including the organization of learning spaces and how the building will function on its site.

In Alberta, projects require approval at each stage. While this work moves projects forward, construction approval is still required before building can begin. A construction timeline will be confirmed once funding is approved.

Each of these projects first received provincial support in March 2025, when the Government of Alberta approved them for the initial planning stage.

Looking Ahead

Edmonton Catholic Schools will continue to work with the Government of Alberta to advance these projects toward construction. Families will continue to be informed and will have opportunities to stay engaged as the projects progress.
