Métis Week
Join us for Métis Week, November 10-16, as we honour the legacy of Louis Riel and celebrate Métis culture and heritage. Hosted by the Métis Nation of Alberta, this annual event features commemorative ceremonies and activities across Alberta.
Métis Week is an annual commemoration held in November to honour the culture, heritage, and contributions of the Métis people, in Canada. This week of recognition centers on Louis Riel Day, marking the anniversary of Riel’s execution in 1885. Métis Week includes ceremonies, educational events, and community gatherings to celebrate Métis identity, honour historical resilience, and highlight the ongoing contributions of the Métis Nation. It serves as a time for both reflection and pride, acknowledging past injustices while celebrating the vibrant Métis culture and the strength of its people today.
Rock Your Mocs
Roc Your Mocs Week is an annual celebration held in November that encourages people across North America to wear their traditional moccasins as a symbol of cultural pride and unity. Participants are invited to share photos of themselves to create a visual expression of solidarity, resilience, and celebrate the vibrancy of Indigenous culture.
The diversity of style and design among moccasins is directly connected to the territory from which they come from. The access to specific resources also dictates the material used, as well as the function. The design is specific to the skilled artist and/or the person wearing the moccasin. Seasons will also dictate the function and form of the moccasin, for example with a boot cuff or fully lined, vs. a slipper style or dance wear.
Moccasins tread lightly, reminding us of our responsibility to Mother Earth and the stories our ancestors gave us. It is the responsibility of wearing the moccasin to step forward in a good way.
