Moving Towards Truth and Reconciliation in Edmonton Catholic Schools

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #63 calls upon the public education system to develop and implement curriculum, share best practices, build student capacity, and identify related teacher training needs. Alberta’s Teaching Quality Standard (TQS), Leadership Quality Standard (LQS), and Superintendent Quality Standard (SQS) focus on building foundational knowledge, creating and sustaining relationships, and career-long learning relating to Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous Education. Division Goals also outline a focus on building capacity, foundational knowledge, and the TRC’s Calls to Action. In response, Edmonton Catholic Schools has created a Truth & Reconciliation portfolio. 

Pillars of Support

The Truth and Reconciliation Specialist supports the Calls to Action, TQS, LQS, SQS, and Division Goals through the following pillars of support:

Truth & Reconciliation Lead Teacher Role and Professional Development
  • One or more designated teacher at each school
  • Monthly Professional Development sessions
  • Train-the-trainer model of Professional Development delivery
  • Needs assessment
  • Ongoing communication and support
All Teacher Professional Development
  • Three Professional Development sessions over the course of the year
School Leader Professional Development
  • Three Professional Development sessions over the course of the year
Whole Division Professional Development
  • Three Professional Development sessions over the course of the year
Indigenous Canada MOOC Community of Practice
  • Monthly virtual gatherings for all interested Division staff to discuss MOOC themes
  • Supported by a website with resources for additional learning in each topic
Curriculum and Pedagogy Resources
  • Monthly presentations tied to curriculum and focused on each monthly theme (Division 1, Division 2, Division 3, Division 4)
Other
  • SharePoint houses all resources
  • Instagram
  • Advisory role as needed for any Division staff (examples of requests include community resources, lesson plans, resource vetting, cultural-responsive practice, etc.
