Site Blessings Celebrate Two New Catholic Schools
June 18, 2026
Edmonton Catholic Schools celebrated two site blessings this spring, marking important milestones for two new Catholic schools that will soon serve families in growing Edmonton communities. With construction expected to begin in 2026, the projects reflect the Division's ongoing commitment to providing excellent Catholic education close to home.
St. Genevieve Catholic Elementary/Junior High School in Laurel
On May 26, Edmonton Catholic Schools gathered to celebrate the site blessing for St. Genevieve Catholic Elementary/Junior High School in the southeast Edmonton community of Laurel.
Located at 3022 17A Avenue, the new school is expected to welcome approximately 950 students when it opens in fall 2028. The K-9 school will provide modern learning environments designed to support student success and foster faith-filled learning opportunities for generations to come.
The Liturgy was led by His Excellency, Bishop David Motiuk, who blessed the site before joining the Board of Trustees and Division leadership for a ceremonial sod-turning.
St. Patrick Catholic Elementary/Junior High School in River's Edge
A second site blessing was held on June 16 in the southwest Edmonton community of River's Edge, one of the city's fastest-growing neighbourhoods.
The new St. Patrick Catholic Elementary/Junior High School, located at 192 Street and River's Edge Way, will also serve approximately 950 students and is scheduled to open in fall 2028. The school will help meet the growing demand for Catholic education in southwest Edmonton and provide students with opportunities to learn and grow in a Christ-centred environment.
The liturgy and blessing was led by His Grace, Archbishop Stephen Hero, with community leaders, dignitaries, and Division representatives in attendance.
Building for the Future of Catholic Education
The two new schools are part of Edmonton Catholic Schools' ongoing efforts to meet the needs of a rapidly growing student population. Division enrolment has surpassed 51,000 students, representing growth of more than 17 percent over the past five years.
The Division continues to work closely with the Government of Alberta to address enrolment pressures across Edmonton. In March 2026, the province announced planning funding for a new Catholic high school, a Catholic K-9 school, and a Catholic K-9 replacement school.
As Edmonton continues to grow, these new schools will help ensure students and families have access to high-quality Catholic education, within their own communities while creating welcoming spaces where faith, learning, and belonging can flourish.
