Celebrating Earth Day 2024

April 22 marks Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 to raise public awareness about environmental protection and encourage conservation efforts. It serves as a global call to action, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and policies to preserve the planet for future generations.

“For the earth and its fullness are the Lord's.”  1 Corinthians 10:26

ECSD students and staff are championing year-round initiatives to honour Earth Day every day.

Go Green Romero

In 2021, St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School launched the Go Green program, transforming a green space into a garden with greenhouses, hydroponics, aeroponics, composting, garden boxes, and an outdoor classroom. Students and staff of multiple grades and classes are utilizing the garden.

The program combines scientific inquiry, environmentalism, wellness, and work experiences. It provides a space for students to explore new passions and learn the importance of being good stewards of the earth.

The Go Green program at St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School is an excellent example of how schools can create a positive impact on the environment and provide opportunities for students to learn beyond textbooks.

K-6 Science Curriculum

The new Alberta Science Elementary Curriculum encourages the principle that caring for our Earth is not just a lesson for Earth Day; it's a foundational aspect of the educational journey.

Beginning in Kindergarten, students are encouraged to identify ways to protect and respect environments, instilling a sense of responsibility towards our planet from the very beginning. In Grade 1, students begin to understand the benefits of spending time in nature, connecting with the Earth firsthand. In Grade 4, they learn from the conservation practices and beliefs of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, recognizing the wisdom gained from their long history with the land. This knowledge empowers students to create plans for implementing conservation practices in their communities, taking steps towards environmental stewardship. By Grade 6, students are equipped to critically analyze the impacts of both natural processes and human activities on climate change, understanding the interconnectedness of human actions and Earth's systems.

Edmonton Catholic Schools teachers, through, the new Alberta Science Curriculum, are educating students about the importance of caring for our Earth and empowering them to take action beyond April 22, fostering a lifelong commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship.
