The Advent Journey

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

Jeremiah 33: 14-16

Advent is a season of anticipation, a time to slow down and prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus. Over the next four weeks, we will light the Advent candles and journey together through this sacred time.

What is Advent?

Advent comes from the Latin “ad + venire,” which means, essentially, “to come” to” or “to come toward.” Advent invites us to prepare spiritually for Christmas and to reflect on Jesus' second coming. Through prayer, Scripture, and acts of kindness, we join the Church in renewing our longing for Christ and His light in the world.

Why Celebrate Advent?

Advent reminds us that Jesus comes into our lives to bring hope, healing, and joy. It’s a chance to connect more deeply with our faith, our families, and our communities.

Join us in celebrating this holy season as we await the greatest gift of all — Emmanuel, God with us.

Advent Traditions

The Advent Wreath

Each week during the season of Advent, we light a candle on a special wreath to help us prepare for Christmas. There are four candles: three purple and one pink. The purple candles represent hope, faith, and peace, while the pink candle, lit on the third week, reminds us to feel joy as we get closer to celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Advent Hymns

Songs like "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” help us focus on the season's spiritual meaning.

Prayer and Reflection

Advent encourages us to set aside time for prayer, silence, and Scripture reading as we prepare our hearts for the birth of our Lord and Saviour.
