Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism are values that call on all of us to commit to working together, learning together, growing together, and praying together. The Division provides a Catholic Christ-centered learning and working environment that is inclusive, welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe that promotes the well-being of all. Racism and discrimination violate the essential dignity of the human person and are contrary to Gospel values.
“We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life.”
-Pope Francis
The Reporting of and Responding to Racism and Discrimination Procedure (AP 172) is supported by both the Division Core Values and the Five Marks of Catholic School Identity.
All students, families, staff, and visitors to Edmonton Catholic Schools have a responsibility to act in a manner that is free of racism and discrimination. Furthermore, all incidents of racism or discrimination that are disclosed or witnessed must be brought to the attention of the Principal, Manager, or Supervisor of that site.
How to Report Discrimination and Racism
Students
If you have witnessed or experienced discrimination or racism, please talk with your parents, guardians or a trusted family member. You can also talk with your teacher, Principal, coach or any other staff member in your school that you feel comfortable with.
If there is no one you feel you can talk to, you can complete the Discrimination and Racism reporting form. This form goes to a specialized team called School Operations Services. Someone from ECSD will contact you to get more information, offer support and if appropriate, an investigation will be started.
If you need help now, you can contact the Kids Help Phone by calling 1-800-668-6868 or texting 686868
Parents, Guardians, Family Members, and School Visitors
If you or your child have witnessed or experienced discrimination or racism, please contact the school Principal or a trusted staff member at the school. You can do this by calling the school, sending an email or visiting the school office. The principal will gather more information from you, and an investigation may be started.
If you are not comfortable reaching out to the principal or a staff member at the school, you can complete the Discrimination and Racism reporting form.
Anonymous Reporting
Anonymous reporting happens when you do not share your name or the identities of other people involved. It can be harder to act on an anonymous report because we cannot get more information if we need it. You are encouraged to include your name and contact information so that we can follow up with you.
