Hairstylist Apprenticeship/Barber Apprenticeship

Did you know that, while in high school, you can complete the entire classroom instruction component required to become a barber or hairstylist?

This program is designed for high school students who are wanting to launch a career in the Hairstylist or Barber trades. Interested students first take Cosmetology 10 before enrolling in the Hairstylist/Barber Apprenticeship stream, which includes courses at the 20 and 30 level. There is also an optional fourth year course for students wishing to complete the whole classroom instruction component for the Hairstylist program. The classroom instruction component for Barbering is covered through the Hairstylist/Barber Apprenticeship 20 and 30 courses.

In the Hairstylist/Barber Apprenticeship program, students are introduced to a variety of processes, practical skills, and safety considerations while preparing for workplace expectations. Through a combination of theory learning and hands-on lab experiences, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to meet Alberta's Barber and/or Hairstylist standards.

The Hairstylist/Barber Apprenticeship program covers the same material that is taught in post-secondary institutions. Concepts are taught by a teacher who is also a Red Seal journeyperson with the credentials, expertise, and technical knowledge to deliver a post-secondary curriculum in a high school setting.

By the end of this program, students can expect to earn a total of either 21 (Barber – period one) or 42 (Hairstylist – periods one and two) thirty-level high school credits. After successful completion of the program, students will have the opportunity to take the corresponding apprenticeship exams. Upon passing the exams and completing the required hours of on-the-job learning, students will be ready to pursue a career as a hairstylist or barber!
