As announced by the Government of Alberta, Monday, September 19, 2022 will be a provincial day of mourning, as opposed to a statutory holiday, to mark Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

ECSD schools will hold classes as scheduled, and offices will remain open on Monday, September 19, 2022.

Our schools will be encouraged to find meaningful ways to commemorate the passing of Her late Majesty, including holding a moment of silence or watching the livestream of the outdoor ceremony at the Alberta Legislature.

Edmonton Catholic Schools joins Alberta, our country, and the rest of the Commonwealth in mourning her death and remembering her great works of service to her country and the world.

In 2005, students from St. Mary/St. Monica Catholic Elementary School performed three songs outside City Hall for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when they visited Edmonton to mark Alberta’s centennial.  

Prayer for Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Almighty, all-merciful God, we grieve the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. Surround us with your consolation and comfort. Listen to the prayers of your faithful. May we be sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.

Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, let us pray together:

Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.

Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

May the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin bring peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
