First Period
Welding Apprenticeship Program
This program is designed for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the welding trade. Through a combination of theory learning and hands-on shop experience, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to meet Alberta's first period Welder apprenticeship standards.
The curriculum closely mirrors that of post-secondary institutions such as NAIT and SAIT, and is taught by a teacher who is also a journeyperson Red Seal Welder with the credentials, expertise, and technical knowledge to deliver a post-secondary curriculum in a high school setting. This program emphasizes safety, technical accuracy, and professionalism while preparing students for workplace expectations and further apprenticeship training.
By the end of this program, students can expect to earn a total of 15 thirty-level high school credits. After successful completion of the program, students will have the opportunity to take the first-year apprenticeship exam. Upon passing the exam and completing an additional 1560 hours of on-the-job experience, students will achieve second-year recognition as a welder — giving them a significant head start in the industry!
We have partnered with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) to establish a post-high school pathway for Welding Apprenticeship students. Qualified St. Oscar Romero Welding Apprenticeship students may receive transfer credit to NAIT’s Advanced Welding Technology diploma program. Students may be eligible for admission directly into the second term of this diploma program. This is one possible pathway for students. Welding Apprenticeship graduates may also pursue the apprenticeship pathway.
