Options for Academic Upgrading
Earning a high school diploma is essential for many career and education pathways in Alberta. Most jobs require at least a high school or equivalent diploma, and many post-secondary programs have specific course requirements. Edmonton Catholic Schools offers a variety of programs designed to help students complete high school and earn the credits they need for future opportunities. These include:
- Traditional High School at St. Joseph Catholic High School
- Cardinal Collins Academic Centres (formerly known as Fresh Start)
- PASS (part-time alternative self-paced school)
- Dual Credit (students can enroll in post-secondary courses, earning both high school and post-secondary credits at the same time)
- Summer School with various courses at the 10, 20, and 30 levels.
There are several terms to describe upgrading students, such as:
- Grade 13 or 4th year high school students
- Grade 14 or 5th year high school students

Traditional High School
St. Joseph Catholic High School welcomes students who need to continue their education beyond their three years of high school. We offer courses for upgrading or continuing students in the following formats:
How to Apply
Students in their Grade 13 or Grade 14 years (also known as 4th and 5th year high school students respectively) must apply to St. Joseph. Please note that not all programs or courses are available. Visit our website for more information.
Grades 13 and 14 Students
Students in Grades 13 and 14 (also known as 4th and 5th year high school students) will fall into one of the following categories:
- Upgrading Students
 Students who have graduated with an Alberta High School Diploma or a Certificate of Achievement, but are looking to upgrade their marks or move to a different program.
- Continuing Students
 Students who did not, for whatever reason, achieve their credential (diploma or certificate of achievement) and wish to obtain it.
Cardinal Collins Catholic Academic Centres
Cardinal Collins Catholic Academic Centres (formerly Fresh Start) are student-centered, self-paced programs for senior high school students who who require a alternative learning setting. Students receive one-to-one and small group classroom instruction, and have access to all levels of high school courses with a flexible schedule and one-on-one support from on-site Teacher Advisors.
In partnership with St. Joseph Catholic High School, Cardinal Collins will support Grade 13 and 14 students (4th or 5th year high school students).

PASS (Part-Time Alternative Self-Paced School)
PASS is an Alternative Education high school after-hours program for students who want a self-paced, individualized approach to their education.
Courses are offered in modules (self-paced resources) broken up into smaller units to be completed independently (asynchronously) with the help of a certified teacher. All Alternative Education assessments are completed in person. PASS runs on a semester system from September to January and from February to June.

Dual Credit
Dual Credit opportunities allow students to get a head start on their future by exploring areas of interest in high school. Students can enroll in post-secondary courses, earning both high school and post-secondary credits at the same time. Courses will be offered in the areas of:
- Veterinary/Animal Sciences
- Health Fields and Nursing
- Psychology, Aviation
- Police Studies
- Business
- Sciences
- Administrative Professionals One Year Certificate Program
- Education Assistant One Year Certificate Program
- Accounting
- Early Learning and Information Technology
Each of these courses/programs can be stepping stones to exciting careers in multiple areas. Students at Edmonton Catholic Schools will be able to explore their passions and interests within a high school environment. The credit earned goes towards high school completion and post-secondary studies. Students will be upgrading and bridging into post-secondary and careers.

Summer School
Edmonton Catholic School of Alternative Education offers a variety of 10, 20, and 30-level high school courses in July. Students can choose from classroom-based, self-paced, or online formats.
Options for summer school include:
- a traditional approach to learning within a classroom environment
- instruction for self-motivated students within a module-based learning environment
- online learning in that students can participate in an asynchronous classroom environment supported by Edmonton Catholic School Division teachers
