With The Educational Partnership Foundation, ECSD Alternative Education is offering a tremendous opportunity for high school students interested in the Summer School Trades Careers Program at NO COST!
Students will receive work experience credits (5 credits with the exception of 3 credits for the Boilermaker trade). Prior to the program beginning students will, with the support of their home school and Alternative Education, complete HCS3000 and CSTS2020 (this is mandatory). Training takes place in an industry setting by journey person instructors.
- Explore the possibility of careers related to the TRADES
- Possibility of job placements for successful candidates
- Closing ceremony and completion certificate
Registration opens on: TBA 2026 at 8:00 AM and will close on TBA, 2026 at 4:00 PM.

Student Eligibility
- Open to all ECSD high school students who have completed grade 10 and are minimum 16 years of age. *For Boilermaker, students must be minimum 18 years of age
- If necessary, priority will be given to grade 12 students as space is limited
- Mature, punctual and reliable with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn
Prerequisite Courses
- Students will be required to have completed the following prerequisite courses prior to the start of their respective program:
- English 10-2 and Math 10-3 (or equivalent). Please see this link for further information. entrance_requirements.pdf
- HCS3000 - If a student has not already completed this course, please contact Fernando Guido at Fernando.Guido@ecsd.net
- Construction Safety Training Systems (CSTS/2020) - If a student has not already completed this course, they must contact Fernando Guido at Fernando.Guido@ecsd.net to assist with registration.

Boilermaker Requirements
 
The Boilermaker summer program requires an additional screening process. The training center will carefully select successful candidates for the available seats. Those students must register for the in-person Apprentice Recruitment Information Session.

Students will have to complete an Essential Skills Assessment (ESA). The ESA is based on numeracy, reading comprehension, and document use. Students must score 70% or higher to pass but applicants will also be assessed based on behaviour, attendance, attitude, and application quality during interactions with the lodge.
If you do not meet the 70% requirement, you can re-write the assessment prior to the program start on TBA
Eligibility
 
Students interested in the Introduction to Boilermaker Trades Training Program must:
- commit to two weeks of training: TBA
 
- currently be in Grade 12
 
- complete pre-requisite requirements: HCS 3000 and CSTS 2020 by May 31
 
- provide and wear the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for the training facility- CSA approved 8” steel-toed boots (must have the CSA green triangle on boot)
 
- Safety clothing that pertains to the industry such as long sleeve shirts, cotton pants, coveralls, etc.

Introduction to Boilermaker

This course serves as the starting point for a rewarding journey into the world of boilermaking. Offering hands-on experience and expertise in this specialized trade, students will discover how to create, put together, set up, and take care of boilers, tanks, and vats that are used in industrial operations. This includes working with metal components to ensure their efficiency and safety in various industries. Also taught are the basics of welding and fabrication for boilers, tanks, and pressure vessels., focused on ensuring the structural integrity and safety of these critical industrial components through precise welding techniques and expertise.

Introduction to Carpentry

This course introduces two career paths for the carpentry trade: Carpenter and Scaffolder. Carpentry - learn how to craft and repair structures using wood and other materials. Students will develop skills in measuring, cutting, and joining materials to create functional and visually appealing structures. Scaffolder - gain expertise in building and taking down scaffolding systems, ensuring safe access for workers during construction and maintenance projects. Important skills in learning and understanding scaffold design, installation, and safety protocols for supporting a variety of construction tasks will be taught.

Introduction to Electrician

Electricians are experts in installing and maintaining wiring and components in various settings including homes, businesses, and industrial facilities. Introduction to Finishing Trades

Participants of this course learn essential skills such as tool usage, surface preparation, and painting/coating applications. We focus on Painter Decorators but also introduce other finishing trade options like Glaziers, Drywall Tapers, Hazardous Waste Removal Experts, and Floor Covering specialists. By the end of the course, students will have strong skills and a better understanding of the finishing trades industry.

Introduction to Insulator Heat & Frost

We'll cover the essential role of Heat and Frost Insulators (previously called "Mechanical Insulators"), who are responsible for managing temperature control and preventing energy loss in buildings. Students will learn how to install insulation materials effectively to minimize sound transmission, control air circulation, and block the passage of smoke and fire. This course serves as a solid foundation for those interested in pursuing a career in this vital aspect of construction and energy efficiency. Insulators play a key role in helping the environment by ensuring proper insulation is used that can significantly save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

Introduction to Ironworker

This course introduces two career paths for ironworking: reinforcing and structural. Ironworker Reinforcing - You'll learn how to reinforce concrete structures by placing and securing materials like steel bars and ensuring buildings are strong and durable. Ironworker Structural: This path focuses on fabricating structural steel for buildings and bridges, and ornamental ironwork. Students will also gain skills in erecting steel structures, welding, installing various components, and even repairing existing structures. This diverse training prepares them for a versatile construction career.

Introduction to Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)

The Introduction to Millwright course will teach students the fundamental skills needed to become a Millwright. Introduction to Pipe Trades

Trades Careers Apprenticeship Bursary:
The goal of the Trades Careers Apprenticeship Bursary is to support and remove barriers for Trades Careers students who are on their path to becoming a certified journeyperson. This bursary is available to students for each level of apprenticeship education, to a maximum of four bursaries (total of $2000).
