No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
~John 15: 13~
In the scripture passage just before the one shared above, Jesus told His disciples to love one another as He had loved them. Each year, thousands of women and men enlist in the military, knowing full well that they may have to lay down their lives in order for there to be peace in our world. Much like Christ, they are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for humankind. Let us take time on this November 11 to pause and give thanks for those soldiers who have served and for those who have died that we may know peace.
I would like to share a beautiful Remembrance Day poem which was written by grade 4 student Ella Gagnon from Sister Annata Brockman Catholic Elementary/Junior High School.
There they lay
Across the bays
Thinking about those dreadful days.
The things they had done
They knew they could have run
But they stayed and did what had to be done.
The horrifying things they saw that they had to keep inside
The innocent people and soldiers that died
But they knew they had to fight for their lives.
Courage is what they had.
This had been horrifying, it had been sad
These wars were more than just bad
All wars have victory and loss
But they fought hard knowing all costs.
The horrifying and devastating paths they had to cross
They saw things too horrible to discuss.
It was a different world but they had to adjust
But one thing you should remember is
They did it for us.
