Prayer for Peace

In past weeks, we have witnessed with great concern the rallies and riots in the United States and around the world, the result of the violent deaths of African Americans amid the face of systemic racism. Pope Francis himself remarked this morning about the disturbing social unrest in the United States following the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd. He said: “My friends, we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life. At the same time, we have to recognize that the violence of recent nights is self-destructive and self-defeating. Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost.”

As the end of our school year fast approaches, it is difficult to make sense of the unrest around the world. We live in uncertain times, trying to understand the plight of our global neighbors. We must turn our eyes to the anguish of those affected by racism and violence while also grieving and mourning the loss of human life.

Almighty and merciful God, Lord of the universe. All that you have created is good and your compassion for the sins of humankind knows no limits. We come to you to ask for peace in our world and its people: to abolish hatred; to restore friendship; and to instil in the hearts of your people the gifts of forgiveness and reconciliation. Prince of Peace, we pray for those who have been killed and impacted by these acts of violence and unrest. Heal and console their bodies and hearts, and give us the strength and courage to walk alongside them in their journey.

Eternal Father, in your mercy, we turn to you in your infinite mercy. Bless us with the knowledge that we are secure in your love as we entrust ourselves to the intercession of our Most Blessed Mother, Mary, the Mother of God:

Hail Mary, full of grace. Our Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

We pray this through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
