By exploring the rich heritage of Italian-speaking communities worldwide, students enhance their global perspective and cultural appreciation.
Programming
The Italian program at Edmonton Catholic Schools is carefully structured to provide age-appropriate learning experiences that build progressively, fostering a strong connection to both the language and culture throughout a student’s education. Beginning in Kindergarten, students are introduced to Italian through interactive and engaging lessons, spending approximately 45 minutes per week in language instruction. At this stage, they focus on basic vocabulary, simple phrases, and cultural elements through songs, games, and storytelling. This early exposure helps students develop an ear for the language, laying the foundation for future learning and a deeper appreciation of Italian culture.
Elementary
As students progress through elementary school in Edmonton Catholic Schools, their exposure to Italian expands, with approximately 150 minutes of language instruction per week. During this stage, students build on their vocabulary and develop a stronger grasp of grammar and sentence structure. They also deepen their cultural understanding by exploring Italian art, music, cuisine, geography, and history. This well-rounded approach enhances their language skills while fostering an appreciation for Italy’s rich heritage and its influence in a global context.
Junior High
In junior high, students in Edmonton Catholic Schools continue to strengthen their Italian language skills with approximately 135 minutes of instruction per week. At this stage, they refine their speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities in more complex contexts. Students also deepen their cultural understanding by exploring the intricacies of Italian traditions and customs. Additionally, they often have opportunities to participate in cultural activities such as Italian cooking classes, festivals, and field trips, providing immersive experiences that bring the language and heritage to life.
High School
In high school, Edmonton Catholic Schools offer Italian courses at the 10, 20, and 30 levels, each worth 5 credits. These courses provide students with an advanced academic setting to refine their language skills and apply them in real-world contexts. High school students engage in more sophisticated discussions, read Italian literature, and develop their writing abilities in Italian, all while continuing to explore Italy’s rich culture, history, and global influence. By the time they complete their high school Italian studies, students are not only proficient in the language but also have a deep understanding of the cultural and historical context that shapes it.
