MYP Music 7 - Music 7 is an introductory course in instrumental music. Students will play wind and percussion instruments and study musical notation and theory, ear training and sight reading, as well as instrumental and ensemble technique. Students will have the opportunity to perform at the Louis St. Laurent Grade 7 first Band Concert.
This is a compulsory course for all Grade 7 students.
MYP Music Intensive 8 - Music 8 is a continuation of Music 7, where students were introduced to instrumental music and playing in a concert band. By playing wind and percussion instruments, the students will continue to develop their musical literacy through a variety of music from different genres and historical periods. The ensemble will perform throughout the year at a variety of venues including the winter and end of year concerts at Louis St. Laurent as well as at Band Share Day at the Winspear.
MYP Music Intensive 9 -. By playing wind and percussion instruments, the students will continue to develop their musical literacy through a variety of music from different genres and historical periods. The ensemble will perform throughout the year at a variety of venues including the LSL Winter Concert and Spring Concert, as well as a festival in Edmonton.
Instrumental Music 10MYP/20IB/30/30IB (5 credits)
Instrumental music is a full year course. This program is designed for students studying Oboe, Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Upright Bass and Percussion. The program focuses on skill development and understanding through the study of musical literature with the large ensemble setting.
Students perform concerts and compete at Festivals throughout the year, including at such venues as the LSL theatre, Myer Horowitz Theatre, the Winspear Centre for Music, and more.
In Grade 10 we offer an intensive program in which students meet for Instrumental music every day, all year long. Also, students will complete their CALM and Religion 15 requirements, earning 11 credits. Instrumental music 20 students may enroll in a 5-credit instrumental music class. Finally, Grade 12 students may enroll in Instrumental music 30 for 5 credits.
An integral component of our program is the MYP and DP program. Grade 10 students complete their MYP in the context of a music class. Grade 11 and 12 students also participate within a music class setting, with the option to register for Music 30IB, taking the IB music exam in the spring of their final year.
Prerequisite for Instrumental Music 10 is Music 9, or recommendation of the Fine Arts department.
Instrumental Jazz 15 MYP/25/35 (5 credits)
This program is designed for students studying Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Bass, Drums, Guitar and Piano. Music performance will be studied through the jazz idiom and its various styles, as well as an introduction to jazz improvisation and theoretical knowledge and practical applications of the creative process in a large ensemble setting. Students perform concerts and compete at Festivals throughout the year, including such venues as the LSL Theatre, Yardbird Suite, and our annual show-stopping performance at Big Band night in the spring. Instrumental Jazz meets after school. Students must be enrolled in Music 10, 20, 30 (instrumental) in order to participate in this course. Corequisite: Instrumental Music 10 MYP/20/30
Choral 10 MYP/20/30 (5 credits)
The LSL Choir is a mixed voice choir that is open to all students from grades 10, 11, and 12. Rehearsals are held after school for the entire year. Students will explore aspects of choral singing including vocal technique, sight singing, music theory, ear training, and musicianship through rehearsal and performance as members of a vocal ensemble. The choir performs at a variety of sacred and secular events during the school year. The choral repertoire draws from all periods of music history.
