Principal Message

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at St. Francis Xavier High School.   I hope everyone including parents, staff and students have had an enjoyable and relaxing summer break and ready to start another school year.  This year we are starting a little earlier as students will start on September 1st (grade 10 only) and all students on September 2nd.  I would like to welcome all our new students coming to FX next year and all of our returning grade 11 and 12 students.  I wish them all best of luck in their studies in the coming year.

This coming year will see some new staffing changes as several of our staff will off on one year leaves.  We wish those staff all the best and welcome the new staff who will be taking their place.  At the time of this email not all the staffing changes had been finalized so we will formally introduce the new staff in the fall.

Next year we will be entering the fourth year of the Alberta High School Redesign project.  This project does allow schools the flexibility to try different initiatives to enhance student learning without been bound by 25 hours of instruction for every credit earned.  Part of this initiative is that students have access to a flex block of 40 minutes right after block 2 Monday to Thursday.  This gives student access to their instructors for extra support as there are no classes scheduled during this time.  We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity.  This project also challenges teachers to evaluate their teaching pedagogy and continually look at evaluating their teaching practices as well.

Recently our school district has looked at getting rid of all compulsory fees for that schools have been charging parents for.  For the coming year all compulsory fees that we had previously charged students and parents will be taken out.  The only fees students will be paying for will be for optional courses, caution fee deposit, consumables such as workbooks and novels that the students will keep, athletics and sports academies.  On average parents will be paying $200 less in fees depending how many optional courses a student will be taking.  A new fee schedule has been included in this newsletter.

I would like to encourage all parents to get involved in our Parent Council Association.  Meetings are held Bi-Monthly starting in October.  The Parent Council is also hosting a Casino in November of next year and volunteers will be needed for that.  More information in regards to the casino will follow.

We would like to invite all parents to a Meet the Teacher night on September 14th at 7:00 PM

I am certainly looking forward to starting a new year and getting a chance to meet all the new and returning students for the 2016-2017 school year.  If there are any question or concerns please do not hesitate to call the school to get in touch with myself or the grade coordinators.

The grade coordinators are as follows:

Grade 10 Mr. Michael Mauro
Grade 11 Mrs. Anna Olivieri
Grade 12 Mrs. Zapisocki

 God Bless
