Welcome to the 2018-19 school year at St. Francis Xavier High School. I am hoping everybody had a wonderful summer break and managed to rest and relax and recharge their batteries as we get started with the new school year. I am excited to greet a new crop of grade 10’s to FX, it is always great to see the new grade 10’s showing up to school in the fall a little bit nervous but at the same time very excited to start their high school journey. I am also looking forward to welcome back our returning grade 11 and 12 students as well as any new students to our school this year. The first day of classes for grade 10’s will be September 4th and the grade and 11 and 12 students will start on September 5th.
This coming year we will welcome several new teachers to FX. The new teachers are Julia Dytyniak (Science), Lindsay Brun (English), Samantha Shewing (Foods), Sandra King (Math) and Brendan Leonard (Science). They are all coming from different school experiences and we are looking forward to having them join our staff at FX. We are also welcoming two Educational Assistants to our school this year Tania Starr and Cho Tang to FX and look forward to having part of our staff as well. In addition, we say goodbye to Zack Skrepnyk, our former Strength and Conditioning Coach, and welcome Danielle Ordyniec to fill that role.
Unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to some members of our staff as well. Sally Pahud has retired after spending the last 18 years at FX teaching Math - the last number of years as Math Department Head. We wish Sally all the best, she will be missed. Also, Leah Copeland will be leaving FX to pursue another path in her teaching career. We wish her all the best and she will also be missed as well. We also say good bye to EA’s Cheryl Habel, Kaley Murnane and Fiona Gao as they move on to different schools for next year. We wish them all the best and thank them for the wonderful contributions to our school over the last few years.
Next year we will be entering the sixth year of the Alberta High School Redesign project. This project does allow schools the flexibility to try different initiatives to enhance student learning without been bound by 25 hours of instruction for every credit earned. Part of this initiative is that students have access to a flex block of 40 minutes right after block 2 Monday to Thursday. This gives student access to their instructors for extra support as there are no classes scheduled during this time. We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity. This project also challenges teachers to evaluate their teaching pedagogy and continually look at evaluating their teaching practices as well.
I would like to encourage all parents to get involved in our Parent Council Association. Meetings are held bi-monthly starting in October. We would like to invite all parents to a Meet the Teacher night on September 13th at 7:00 PM, this will give you an opportunity to meet your son/daughter’s teacher and sign up for parent council if you want to get involved.
Regarding scheduling an appointment for a course change in the fall we will be using the same process as last year. We are asking students/parents to book use the on-line booking program to schedule an appointment for a course change if they need one. Please use the instructions on the following page to guide you through the process of scheduling an appointment.
I am looking forward to starting a new year and getting a chance to meet all the new and returning students for the 2018-2019 school year. If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the school to get in touch with myself or the grade coordinators.

Grade 10: Mrs. Anna Olivieri email@example.com
Grade 11: Mr. Nathan Koelmans firstname.lastname@example.org
