The St. Francis Xavier Hockey Academy would like to take a moment to highlight our recent trip to Boston with our Hockey Academy team that consisted of 19 players from grades 10-12. We began our trip in the early morning hours of May 10th as we boarded our flight in Edmonton and ultimately landed safe and sound that afternoon in Boston. We took that evening to enjoy the sights and sounds of Boston as we headed to Quincy Market and explored the historic sites of Faneuil Hall where we enjoyed the local atmosphere of downtown Boston and explored some of the local marketplace venues.
The following morning May 11th we boarded our bus and headed to Marlboro for the annual Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL) Showcase. The boys started their tournament with a 2-2 tie to Hartford that evening which immediately placed them in a must win situation for games 2 and 3 of the round robin if they wished to continue in the tournament.
Day 2 of the tourney found the boys pushing themselves very hard and ultimately winning 4-2 against New York Apple Core in game 2 and winning 10-4 against New Jersey in game 3 to clinch a spot in the tournaments quarter finals the following day. The quarter final match found the only Canadian team in attendance (STFX) playing the only Florida team in the tournament Tampa Bay with the Canadians coming out on top 5-2 and moving on to the semi-finals against another New York team.
Having grabbed some momentum in their morning game, the boys came out and battled hard finding themselves once again on top at the end of regulation with a 3-0 win over New York. With very little rest between the semi-final game and the finals the boys were forced to snack in their dressing room and regroup to face Foxboro Massachusetts in the final which ultimately saw them skate away to victory with yet another 3-0 win.
At the conclusion of the EJHL showcase the STFX team not only found success on the ice but also received numerous accolades from many of the over 100 US Prep School, Eastern Junior coaches/scouts and Division I and III coaches/scouts and tournament organizers in attendance. This tournament proved to be a very positive experience for all of the players from a hockey perspective and also helped to solidify St. Francis Xavier as a very prestigious program in the eyes of those in attendance.
After the EJHL showcase, the STFX team found themselves heading back to Boston to take in more of the local culture as they toured Harvard and Boston University. Both Harvard and Boston University provided a very unique look into the life of a student-athlete as we were granted access to the hockey facilities at both venues and were able to briefly experience the campus life of these student-athletes as we toured through both campuses. Not only did this experience open the eyes of all young players on our team to the tremendous facilities available to the young student-athletes at Harvard and Boston University but also to the importance of maintaining a solid academic standing in their current grades here at FX.
We concluded our trip with a fun-filled Boston Red Sox game in which some of our group found their way on National Television with a very nice foul ball catch by Samm Voss on the STFX team in the bottom of the sixth inning.
