Who Should Enroll?
Any student with a keen interest and aptitude in a particular subject discipline, who
thrives when given an opportunity to reach a higher level of understanding. It is highly
recommended that a student have a pre-requisite grade of 80% or greater, and
demonstrate proficiency in reading and comprehension.
What is Different About It?
The honours program completely covers all academic expectations of the Alberta
Education curriculum in an environment where students are able to reach higher levels of
thought and expression which enables them to demonstrate their best work. The
combination of teachers questioning techniques and the quality of the responses from the
students create an ideal learning environment where the scope and breadth of curricular
expectations are maximized. Formative assessments will be tailored to meet the student’s
deeper level of understanding of the prescribed learning outcomes. As a result, the
students will gain a much deeper understanding of the curriculum and how it relates to
other disciplines and real life experiences.
How are They Assessed?
As in all other streams, the honours program will use a combination of formative and
summative assessment tools. Formative assessments will occur as the student is trying to
achieve a deeper level of understanding of the concepts delivered in class. Summative
assessments will occur once the student’s proficiency has been demonstrated and will be
used to calculate a final grade that reflects the Alberta Education curricular outcomes.
