At St. Edmund, academics and regular attendance are the first priorities for student athletes in each of our Academies. Every student at St. Edmund, whether in the regular academic stream or in a sports academy, is an International Baccalaureate (IB) student.  In keeping with the philosophy of our IB programs, we work to educate the hearts and minds of our students by offering a rigorous academic program within the context of our Catholic identity. Students in the IB programmes develop as internationally-minded, independent thinkers who are committed to success.  

Students enrolled in sports academy programming complete Academy Contracts as a condition of acceptance into the Academy. Students may not be allowed to participate in academy sessions if they are not working to their full potential in the classroom. Regular attendance is very important in terms of achieving academic success.  We expect each of our academy students to maintain or improve their academic standing upon entering the Academy. 

Procedures for monitoring academic progress and attendance are below:

  1. Progress reports and attendance summaries are gathered by lead teachers at the mid-point of each reporting period.
  2. Meetings with students are held to review attendance and progress in academics and the sports academy. 
  3. Should there be concerns with regard to achievement, attendance or behavior,  parents are contacted and concerns are discussed. A meeting may be necessary.

For students who are not meeting expectations in terms of attendance, academics and/or behavior, the following procedures are followed:

  1. The student is placed on Academic Probation. He or she is given one month to improve in areas of concern. The student participates in all Academy activities during the probationary period. When a student is placed on Academic Probation, parents receive a written letter informing them of their child's probationary status. 
  2. If, after the one month period, the student's academic achievement or attendance has not improved, a meeting with the child and the parent/guardian is held to discuss the situation. At this point, the student may be required to withdraw from Academy programming in order to focus on academics. The student remains at school during Academy time and follows a regular classroom schedule. 
  3. If identified concerns have not improved after the second month, then another meeting with the child and the parent/guardian is held. Each case is viewed on an individual basis; but at this point, options for the child are very limited. In most situations, the child will be removed from the sports academy and will be placed in a regular academic class.  Students who reside outside of our boundary area will be asked to return to their home school for the following school year.
