Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate Middle​​ Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 – 16 (grades six through ten). The Middle Years Programme provides a framework of learning that challenges students intellectually while encouraging them to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The Middle Years Programme emphasizes inquiry-based instruction and encourages students to make meaningful connections between their studies and the real world. The Middle Years Programme also promotes the development of three fundamental concepts: communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement. 

​ ​The Middle Years Programme builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes inherent in the Primary Years Programme and serves as excellent preparation for the IB Diploma Programme.  Currently, the Middle Years Programme is offered in grades six through nine at St. Edmund. The final year of the program is completed at our partner school, Archbishop MacDonald High School.​​

​The Middle Years Programme Curriculum Framework

The Middle Years Programme offers a framework through which the Alberta Education program of studies is taught to students. The program consists of eight subject areas that correspond to the provincial curriculum. The programme emphasizes teaching and learning in context, developing conceptual understandings, service as action, approaches to learning, language and identity. Students in the Middle Years Programme complete a Community Project in the fourth year of the programme that emphasizes service as action. Students complete a Personal Project in the fifth and final year of the programme​.

At the center of the each of the IB programmes is the Learner Profile, which is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the students in the 21st century. The Learner Profile is a set of ideals and attributes that students are expected to strive toward and internalize. IB learners are inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers who are also knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced and reflective. The Learner Profile inspires and focuses the work done in IB schools around the world and provides a common language and purpose.​

The Middle Years Program Emphasizes:

  • Approaches to learning (ATL)—demonstrating a commitment to approaches to learning as a key component of the MYP for developing skills for learning.
  • Approaches to teaching—emphasizing MYP teaching strategies, including collaborative learning through inquiry.
  • Concepts—highlighting a concept-driven curriculum.
  • Global contexts—showing how learning best takes place in context.

Highlights of the Middle Years Programme

The IB MYP offers students opportunities for:

Participation in an internationally recognized academic program

  • A broad and balanced education which focuses on the education and well-being of the whole person, with emphasis on the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of each
  • Inquiry, higher level subject mastery, and an awareness of connections between traditional school subjects and the real world.
  • An awareness of complex issues and the development of skills and attitudes needed to initiate and take responsible action in the here and now and in the future​

Requirements of the Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) maintains strict standards and requirements for participation in the MYP. In order to meet these requirements, students must:

  1. Complete a minimum of fifty hours per year in each of the eight subject areas and
  2. Complete a complete a community project by the end of the grade nine (MYP Year 4) year.

In addition, IBMYP students must:

  1. Register in French, fine arts courses (performing arts and visual arts), and a minimum of one design course in each year of the program.
  2. Participate in interdisciplinary units, projects and activities designed to provide them with the skills needed to become creative, critical and reflective learners
  3. Maintain a Portfolio of Achievement that reflects their growth as learners.The fifth and final year of the MYP is offered at our partner school, Archbishop MacDonald. Students registering for year five of the MYP must register in a second language, must meet the requirements for a minimum of fifty hours in each subject area and must complete a personal project. Archbishop MacDonald also offers the IB Diploma Program, which leads to advance credit at many universities, including the University of Alberta.
  4. Students in Sports Academies who wish to earn the IB MYP Certificate must register at Archbishop MacDonald for the fifth and final year of the programme. In addition, they must choose French as a Second Language for their complementary course and commit to 50 hours of fine arts instruction during flex time on Thursdays.

Many students at St. Edmund choose not to register at Archbishop MacDonald. Students exiting the MYP in Year 4 will earn a Certificate indicating full or partial completion of the requirements of Year 4 of the MYP.
