TriWorldSchool2Colourmed.jpgSt. Edmund Elementary/ Junior High School is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate World School, offering the IB Primary and Middle Years Programmes to students in North Edmonton. All students at St. Edmund take part in IB programming.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is offered to students in 100 Voices (pre-K) through grade five. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is offered to students in grades six through nine. The fifth and final year of the MYP is offered at our partner school, Archbishop MacDonald High School . Archbishop MacDonald also offers the IB Diploma Programme.
There are no prerequisites for entry into any of the IB programmes. It is not necessary, for example, for students to complete the Primary Years Program before beginning the Middle Years Program. There are common elements in the three programmes, however, and each one flows naturally into the next. Each of the IB programmes emphasizes inquiry-based instruction and international-mindedness. The IB programmes promote the education of the whole person by emphasizing the student's intellectual, personal, social, emotional and physical health. In keeping with their reputation for academic excellence and innovative teaching strategies, the IB programmes also emphasize knowledge and studies in the major traditions of learning - languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics and the arts.

IB Learner Profile

The IB mission is given meaning for students largely through the Learner Profile, which is the IB mission translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The Learner Profile is common to all three IB programs and as the IB says, "The learner profile provides a long-term vision of education. It is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of schools and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose."

IB Programme Standards and Practices

The IB maintains strict standards with regard to how its programmes are delivered in schools around the world. Each IB World School must meet IB standards in terms of delivering the programmes to students. As well, each school is required to annually publish the IB General Regulations and Rules and the make them available to parents. Teachers in IB World Schools are required to take part in extensive training related to the programmes. Every five years, IB World Schools complete an extensive self-study in preparation for evaluation visits from the IB. St. Edmund recently completed self-studies and evaluation visits from IB. Recommendations from IB with regard to our delivery of our IB programmes are included in our IB Action Plans and reflected in our annual School Plan for Continuous Growth.
