Elite Athlete Programming
Our Lady of Mount Carmel has unique programming that allows for student athletes to excel in their sport while maintaining high academic standards.
In Junior High, all core subjects are taught in the morning allowing our Elite Program athletes the flexibility to participate in their sport of choice in the afternoon without sacrificing academic excellence. This core subject schedule is the same for our four Academies: Hockey, Soccer, Performing Arts, and Recreation. For students to be successful in an Academy or in the Elite Athlete Program, they need to be motivated, independent learners.
The three Elementary Academies (Hockey, Soccer, and Performing Arts) are mostly scheduled in the latter part of the morning so core subjects tend to be taught first thing and then in the afternoon. This makes it challenging to accommodate the elementary students in our Elite Athlete Program, especially if they are training off-site every afternoon. Our teachers do their best but, given the dynamics of our school, they may not be able to provide the same amount of core subject instruction to the Elite Athletes as they can to the rest of the class. Similar to those in our JH Academy or JH Elite Athlete Program, our Elementary Elite Athletes have to be motivated, independent learners to be successful.
With hard work and perseverance, athletes in the sports of tennis, diving, swimming, gymnastics, and others can usually build their schedules around the school's timetable while still maintaining the demands of their competitive sport.
