Chief Superintendent's Message - February 2022
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7
Reflecting upon scripture about the gift of love is an excellent way to begin the month of February. This oft-quoted passage not only speaks to us of the enduring love of our God for his people, it also serves to remind us of how we should treat each other. For those of us who are married, we more than likely listened to this passage as part of our wedding ceremony. We certainly live these words with our families. God calls us each by name to bring patient, kind, enduring love to all those whom we encounter in our life’s journey. We have plenty of opportunity to practice expressing love on all these levels this month as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, Family Day, Pink Shirt Day, and Random Acts of Kindness Week.
Edmonton Catholic Schools is pleased to announce that we have been chosen as one of Alberta’s Top 75 Employers for 2022, our seventh year in a row! We are proud to be one of the leaders in our field in providing exceptional conditions and opportunities for our employees, even in the face of the chaos and uncertainty of COVID-19. We know that our staff, in the vast array of roles that it takes to bring an exceptional Catholic education to life, are essential in nurturing our students to reach their fullest potential.
Throughout February, our Division will be recognizing and celebrating Black History Month. This is an excellent opportunity for all members of our community to learn more about and to honour the legacy of Black Canadians. Edmonton Catholic Schools consultants have shared many opportunities and rich resources with our schools so that they can learn and explore more about Black History in Canada and around the world. Throughout the month, we will be sharing examples of students’ learning on our website and social media. We look forward to sharing this learning journey with you.
We will pass the midpoint of the school year as February begins. This year, like the last, has been unbelievably difficult for families and staff alike. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our families for the immense support that you have given to your school communities in keeping them as healthy as possible. I would also like to celebrate our amazing staff. In a time where anxiety is rampant, they have done an amazing job of keeping our schools focused on safety, learning and personal and communal growth. They bring #ECSDfaithinspires to life every day!
In the spirit of love, I leave you with a thought from Pope Francis: “Love is the only light which can constantly illuminate a world grown dim.” (Twitter, 04/14/2016)
Have a glorious February!
