Religious Education Services


Religious Education Services includes a Manager, two Religious Education Consultants – Elementary and Secondary, as well as two Division Chaplains. Together, the Department services the needs of schools and staff to ensure that the Religious Education programs of study are implemented in accordance with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), the Alberta Catholic Bishops and Alberta Education; supports schools in the parish-home-school relationship; assists with Division events such as the School Opening Mass, Faith Development Day, the Permeation afternoon, as well as the Grace for the Heart and Soul; supports celebrations, prayer services, and days of reflection for staff and students; networks with the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, the Ukrainian Eparchy, Newman Theological College, St. Joseph’s College, and other organizations within the community; and nurtures the permeation of faith throughout the life of the School Division.


The Division Chaplains, Father Glenn McDonald and Father Julian Bilyj, aligned with the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton and Ukrainian Eparchy, focus on the priorities of evangelization, faith formation, vocations, Division goals and priorities, and provide spiritual guidance to students and staff. Together with Religious Education Services, they provide:

  • leadership in the prayer and Eucharistic life of the school division;
  • clarity, guidance and direction in the understanding, articulation and appreciation of our Catholic identity;
  • a theological perspective on Division policies;
  • a cohesive and consistent adherence to the teachings of the Catholic Church;
  • guidance and support to youth through community building activities such as retreats, rallies, and social justice initiatives, and to encourage vocations;
  • faith formation in staff and students;
  • spiritual guidance to Edmonton Catholic Schools' Catholic Educational Leadership


In collaboration with Religious Education Services, two Religious Education Consultants, one for elementary and one for the secondary – Kathleen Nguyen and Susanna Kaup respectively - work with schools to:

  • facilitate the implementation of the new Religious Education resources for Grades 1 to 8, Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ;
  • support the Religious Education courses for High School - Religious Studies 15, 25, and 35 and Religions of the World 35;
  • facilitate revisions to the Grade 9 program
  • participate in the development of a new Kindergarten program
  • support the revision of the Ukrainian Religious Education Program of Study;
  • assist in the cross-curricular integration of Religious Education outcomes into other subject areas;
  • collaborate with all division curriculum staff to permeate the Catholic faith into curriculum and instruction


Sandra Talarico, the Manager of Religious Education Services and part-time Religious Education Consultant, works with Newman Theological College in its implementation of the MRE and Certificate programs. Together with Religious Education Services, she:

  • liaises with the School Division, the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, the Ukrainian Eparchy, as well as other community organizations;
  • encourages active participation in courses and workshops offered by Newman Theological College, St. Joseph's College, the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, the Ukrainian Eparchy, as well as other community organizations;
  • facilitates Religious Education course equivalency for Edmonton Catholic School teachers;
  • participates in staff development initiatives;
  • provides leadership in the prayer and Eucharistic life of Lumen Christi Catholic Education Centre;
  • collaborates with the School Division to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another
  • directs the Religious Education and Certificate Programs at Newman Theological College.
