Students applying for post-secondary schools should consider applying for scholarships and bursaries.


Scholarships and bursaries are available from a variety of organizations and institutions as well as from the Alberta Government. To find the scholarship(s) and bursary(ies) best suited to your career choice, students must be prepared to research extensively through the list below.  Note, some scholarships appear on more than one database.

 In the News: 2021 Edmonton Catholic Schools Scholarship Winners


Archbishop MacDonald Catholic High School's Jennifer Huynh wins the University of Alberta's Schulich Leaders Award and the accompanying $80,000 scholarship. There are 100 Schulich awards distributed to 20 universities around Canada, including the University of Alberta, which chose Huynh as a recipient this year. The scholarships are designed to support students who are seeking post-secondary education in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). 

St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School student Georgia Simkin wins the University of British Columbia's Presidential Scholarship.  



Division Bursaries, Scholarships, Awards and Trust Funds


Applications for any of these scholarships must be from students who are currently graduating from the Edmonton Catholic School Division in the year of their application.

Anne Anderson Scholarship


Amount:   Variable

Description:
The Anne Anderson Scholarship has been awarded to First Nations, Metis and Inuit students in the Edmonton Catholic School Division since 1979. Dr. Anne Anderson had a pioneering role in supporting and promoting the importance of Cree language instruction. Indigenous Learning Services is honoured to present this award to Indigenous students enrolled in the Division's Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin Cree Language and Culture Program.

Award:
This award is monetary and the amount and number of awards given are variable. Successful applicants will be notified and receive their award before the end of the school year.

Criteria:
Indigenous students in junior high and high school are eligible to receive this award through school sponsorship and recommendation. The award is given based on achievement in Cree Language and Culture as well as the following areas:

  • Academics
  • Leadership
  • Community/School Involvement

Deadline:   April 30

Please Submit:

  • Student letter describing their achievements and the impact of these achievements
  • Letter of reference from a teacher, coach or an administrator
  • Student academic transcripts
  • Name of current school and grade level
  • Student home address and phone number
  • Letter of acceptance to post-secondary program (if applicable)

Frank Schneider Educational Trust Fund


Amount:  $1,000

Description:
It is intended to assist the eligible children of Division employees.

Criteria:
To be eligible, the applicant must:
  • Be a graduate of the Division
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary program with the intention of entering the field of education
  • Indicate a need for financial assistance

Deadline:   June 15

Application:
Submissions must be received by the Superintendent of Educational Planning.  The submission will include:

  • A letter of interest and a completed application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Documentation to indicate the criteria have been met     

Selection:
The administrative committee shall select the recipient from among the applicants.

Presentation:
The award will be presented at the recipient's high school award ceremony.

Geraldine MacIntosh Memorial Bursary


Amount:  $1,000

Description:
The award is to be presented annually to an English as a Second Language (ESL) student who is graduating from Grade 12 and entering any post-secondary institution the following academic year.

Criteria:
To be eligible, the applicant must:
  • Be a graduate of the Division
  • Has an academic average sufficient to gain entrance to a post-secondary institution
  • Be a well-rounded student who has taken an active role in school community activities
  • Show financial need
  • Has landed immigrant status
  • Received ESL assistance at any point in their education with the Division
Deadline: June 15
 
Application:
The application should be received by the Superintendent of Educational Planning.  The submission will include:
  • A short essay (maximum of 400 words) briefly describing:
    • Future goals
    • The impact the ESL program had in helping the student achieve his/her educational goals
    • Financial need
    • Community involvement
  • Documentation to indicate that the student has met the criteria indicated
  • Three letters of recommendation    
Selection:
The administrative committee shall select the recipient from among the applicants.

Presentation:
The award will be presented at the recipient's high school award ceremony.

John and Vera Dunnigan Education Scholarship Application Form


Amount:  $1,000

Description:
This scholarship shall recognize and honor a student graduate of the Division who is studying Education.

Criteria:
To be eligible the applicant must
  • Be a graduate of the Division
  • Be enrolled at a post-secondary program with the intention of teaching
  • Indicate a need for financial assistance
  • Participated in school activities

Deadline:    June 15

Application:
The submission will be received by the Superintendent of Educational Planning.  Submissions should include:

  • A letter of interest and a completed application form
  • Letters of support from administrators or teachers
  • Documentation to indicate compliance with criteria

Kay Krausert Award Fund


Amount:  $500

Description:
The fund was established to provide a yearly scholarship to a Division Grade 12 Business Education student for further education at a recognized post-secondary education institution.

Criteria:
To be eligible, students must:
  • Be a graduate of the Division 
  • Have majored in Business Education (CTS) with successful completion of three Grade 12 courses in the business/information processing components of CTS
  • Demonstrate a strong service commitment while attending senior high school
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary institution for further education in the area of Business  

Deadline:  June 15

Pura Scholarship


Amount:  $1,000

Description:
This scholarship is to recognize a Grade 12 graduate of the Division who will be entering a university, college or post-secondary technical institute, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts:
  • Business Education
  • Home Economics
  • Industrial Arts
  • Vocational education
  • Any technical field   
Criteria:
To be eligible, the applicant must:
  • be a graduate of the Division
  • be enrolled in a post-secondary program, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts 
Deadline:  June 15

Application:
Application must be received by the Superintendent of Educational Planning.  Submissions should include:
  • Name, address, telephone number, date of birth
  • High school(s) attended, work experience, interests and activities
  • Record of Grade 12 marks
  • Proof of registration at a post-secondary educational institution and area of study 
Selection:
The administrative committee shall select the recipient from among the applicants.

Presentation:
Awarded annually at the recipient's high school award ceremony.

Iskotew - Acahkos (Fire Star) Bursary


Amount:  Four awards of $750 each

Description:
Edmonton Catholic Schools, Indigenous Learning Services designed the Iskotew - Acahkos (Fire Star) Bursary that distinguishes our Indigenous students who demonstrate leadership and inspire others through embracing and respecting an Indigenous perspective and world view by:
  • Persevering in his/her studies despite challenges
  • Maintaining a positive outlook on his/her future opportunities and dreams
  • Providing leadership within a cultural perspective by promoting his/her heritage/culture
  • Embracing and respecting the heritage/culture of all
Criteria:
Be enrolled full-time in their final year of high school and progressing toward graduation with plans to:
  • Enter a post-secondary institution in the fall semester
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to the community
  • Be involved in co-curricular activities
  • Maintain a good academic standing
Application:
Submit the following documents to Aboriginal Learning Services:
  • Applicant's essay including bio, accomplishments and future career goals
  • One signed reference form from an Elder, sports coach, teacher, school administrator or Indigenous graduation coach
  • Applicant's resume
  • High school transcripts
The award recipients(s) will receive a cash award of $750

Selection:
The following questions will be utilized during the selection process:
  1. Does the applicant show an overall positive attitude towards his/her efforts?
  2. Does the applicant reflect the spirit and intent of the award?
  3. Is the applicant viewed as a role model to others?
  4. What impact has the applicant's efforts/achievements had on the applicant and his or her community?
  5. How does the applicant's efforts/achievements benefited other FNMI Youth?
  6. What are the recipient(s) future and ambitions?
