ECSD to Require All Employees to be Fully Vaccinated
Immunization is the most effective means to prevent the spread of COVID-19, prevent outbreaks, and preserve in-person learning. As a result of our responsibilities to those we serve and employ, including our students under the age of 12 who are unable to be immunized at this point in time, Edmonton Catholic Schools will require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, has continuously stated that the best way to protect ourselves and children who cannot be immunized is to be fully vaccinated.
“This is an important step in our commitment to keep students and staff as safe as possible during the ongoing pandemic. By requiring staff to be vaccinated, we reduce the impact COVID-19 cases have on our classrooms, schools, and communities,” said Chief Superintendent Robert Martin.
ECSD employees have until October 25, 2021 to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they require an accommodation pursuant to a protected ground under the Alberta Human Rights Act or participate in a regular, rapid testing program that ensures they are not COVID-19 positive while in contact with students and other employees.
Other individuals who are in direct contact with students and/or employees must also be fully vaccinated in order to enter a Division property. This includes independent contractors and volunteers. The Division will not require parents or students to be vaccinated.
“We have been in discussions with our employee groups about mandatory vaccinations and are working to finalize timelines and implementation specifics,” explained Board Chair Sandra Palazzo. “We will continue to assess, and if appropriate, implement reasonable measures that we believe will have a positive impact on health and safety in our schools and sites.”
More information regarding timelines and logistics will be shared directly with employees.
