Educational Experiences 1

This program of choice is designed to help students with complex, diverse needs who have profound cognitive challenges. This is a blended program of choice in a community school setting with multi-faceted programming opportunities (school, home, community and health). The program resides within the natural school community and includes intentional and personalized interventions and programming. Currently there are three sites for the Educational Experiences 1:

  • Elementary  - St. Gabriel
  • Junior high - St. Mark
  • High school  - Austin O'Brien

This program of choice is highly individualized and utilizes a team approach for programming to include the parent/guardian and outside stake holders (Edmonton Regional Collaborative Service Delivery, Inclusion Alberta, etc.) and our inclusive multi-disciplinary teams. Each site is supported with a teacher, licensed practical nurse, therapeutic assistants in speech and language and occupational therapy, educational assistants, and specialists.

Programming includes opportunities to:

  • experience a sense of belonging
  • communicate
  • socialize
  • to move and develop motor skills
  • learn self-care
  • participate in purposeful activities
  • be included in regular programming and the greater school community
  • receive therapeutic interventions

Instruction may take different forms including one to one instruction, small group instruction, whole group activities, or teacher directed activities. Instruction may also include activities within grade level classrooms or option classes.

Older students (primarily in high school), may be involved in community based experiences to support transition into meaningful community adult placements upon completion of the High School Experience.  Inclusion enhances communication, social skill development , learning skill and community acceptance.
