From Fairy Tales to Pirate Sails: Deliberate Inquiry and Emergent Curriculum
What is an Emergent Curriculum?
An emergent curriculum is a way of planning instructional content based on the interests of the children. The classroom teacher and early learning facilitator (who is a partner with the teacher), engage in careful observation, documentation and collaboration in order to plan provocations and embed curriculum into ongoing projects. Children learn naturally when their interests are captured and the processes of inquiry and creativity are supported. It is the role of the teacher to provoke the interests of children and provide an invitation to learn, question, and explore.
Children who are exposed to a variety of ideas and wonders, are better able to discover and develop their own interests. Emergent curriculum integrates existing curriculum, skills, concepts and competencies into child-led experiences. There is accountability and ongoing assessments of concepts and skills both “covered” and learned by the children.
