Edmonton Catholic Schools values the growth and development of each and every child within an inclusive context. As we program and meet the needs of all children, it is important to embrace Universal Designs for Learning – where we are able to target specific goals and intentional strategies for students with identified needs, but also recognize that many of the strategies are excellent for all, wherever children are on the learning continuum.


In Early Learning we are fortunate to have developed a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) that consists of the following disciplines:


  • Early Learning Educational Consultant
  • Speech-Language Pathology
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Emotional Behaviour Specialists and Psychology
  • Family School Liaison Services
  • Physical Therapy
  • Adapted Physical Education
  • Multi-Cultural Animator
  • Fine Arts

Over the past 7 years this team has grown – and we began to value the notion of universal designs for learning as our Team began working more directly with teachers and children within the functional context of the classroom. Over time, these strategies have evolved (and will continue to evolve) as we continue to build capacity within our classrooms – where teachers, facilitators and assistants receive modeling from the Team, and then are able to continue modeling and working with children using these strategies in the absence of the therapists. In this way, all children receive these excellent strategies all day and every day which has a much greater impact on their learning and growth. These universal designs for learning are often referred to as universal strategies within the context of this resource.

The 2nd edition of Universal Designs in the Early Learning Context takes us further into our multi-disciplinary team’s expertise and their application of strategies that can be utilized in all levels of the pyramid of intervention.  Significant revisions include aligning many of these strategies across the disciplines.



The cost of the book is $25/book + shipping & handling.
