On behalf of the Council of Elders, I would like to extend greeting for a blessed school year.  We have been busy in the community with harvesting medicines, attending ceremonies, pow wow and round dances. Also, we have moved our office from Sacred Heart Centre to Ben Calf Robe School located on 11833-64 street, please feel free to drop by or contact us at 780-471-2360.  We wish everyone a blessed school year as we work towards making a difference into the lives of our children and community.

The primary role of council is to provide guidance and the sharing of cultural knowledge with Edmonton Catholic School Trustees, district leadership, staff and students.  The council will consist of ten elders from within the city and to include membership from the surrounding rural areas. Recently the council submitted an Action Plan to the Edmonton Catholic School Trustees as part of the process that formalized the Council of Elders, the first council of its kind in Alberta. The District now has a strong link with the Indigenous community. This role of the elders will include:

  • An on-going relationship based on support with the Board of Trustees and superintendent;
  • To provide cultural information to the district, staff and students;
  • To foster a link between the Indigenous community and the Edmonton Catholic School District;
  • Support for Indigenous students and their families;

Sacred Pipe Ceremony

The Council of Elders hosts a Sacred Pipe Ceremony four times a year to welcome and honour each new season hosted at a Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin (Way of Life) School.  Please join us as we celebrate friendships, welcome new friends to the circle and to ask Creator for blessings.

If you have any questions on protocol of the sacred pipe ceremony please contact the Council of Elders office at 780-471-2360
