Letter to parents on Enterovirus
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We wanted to make you aware of a new virus that is affecting children with cases being reported throughout North America.
A total of 49 cases of the Enterovirus D68 have been confirmed in Alberta between July and September 10, 2014. Enterovirus is contagious and will spread through close contact with someone already sick, e.g. from touching contaminated surfaces or when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms of respiratory EV-D68 infections include:
- Cough, runny nose or sneezing
- Skin rash
- Mouth blisters
- Body and muscle aches
There is no specific treatment or vaccine to prevent EV-D68. If your child has a respiratory condition, such as asthma and is showing symptoms of the virus, you can call Health Link Alberta, T: (866) 408-5465, or visit your doctor. To protect you from Enterovirus, the following steps are recommended:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water
- Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. When unavailable, cough or sneeze into your arm. Throw away tissue and wash hands afterwards.
- Keep fingers away from eyes, nose and mouth.
If you have symptoms of the virus, stay home. Do not visit others until your have fully recovered.
