Applications for any of the scholarships must be from students who are currently graduating from the District in the year of their application.

Anne Anderson Scholarship

 

Amount:

Variable

Description:
The Anne Anderson Scholarship has been awarded to First Nations, Metis and Inuit students in the Edmonton Catholic School District since 1979.  Dr. Anne Anderson had a pioneering role in Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin Cree language instruction.   Indigenous Learning Services is honoured to present this award to indigenous students in our school district in Dr. Anne Anderson’s name.

Award:
This award is monetary and the amount and number of awards given are variable.  Successful applicants will be notified and receive their award before the end of the school year.

Criteria:
Indigenous students in junior high and high school can be recommended for this award by school sponsorship.  The award is given based on achievement in at least two of the following areas:

  • Academics
  • Leadership
  • Community/School Involvement
  • Aboriginal Language and Culture

  • Student letter describing their achievement and the impact it has made on them
  • Letter of reference from a teacher, coach, administrator, or FNMI Liaison

Audrey Eileen Costigan Memorial Scholarship

 

 Amount:

$2,500.00 for both one male and one female Grade 12 student annually

Description:
Audrey Eileen Costigan was a devoted and enthusiastic teacher who taught with the Edmonton Catholic
School Board for more than two decades.  A natural athlete, Audrey was passionate about promoting a
healthy attitude with respect to physical fitness in her students as well as the community.  Audrey enjoyed
a number of sports including running, swimming, golf, tennis, aerobics and Yoga.  Audrey dedicated a
great deal of time to volunteer as a coach in various school programs.  She also served as a volunteer
fitness instructor at the YMCA and taught fitness at the Kinsmen Sports centre for 27 years.  Audrey
believed in giving back to her school and the community.

Audrey passed away on May 27, 2009 after a 3 ½ year battle with cancer.  During this time, Audrey
continued to be physically active and did her utmost to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  She was an inspiration
to all who knew her!

Criteria:
The following criteria will be used in the selection process:

  • A graduate of Edmonton Catholic Schools
  • Is enrolled in a post-secondary program at the University of Alberta
  • Demonstrates excellence in their leadership ability by working with children
  • Displays the willingness to help others further their learning
  • Demonstrates ability to be involved in leading a healthy, active lifestyle
  • Displays active athletic involvement through participation on one or more school athletic teams,
    or other team or individual athletic involvement outside the school setting

A completed application form must be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning.  Submissions with the application form should include:

  • A letter of interest explaining how they embody the characteristics similar to Audrey Eileen Costigan
  • Enclosed copy of high school transcripts
  • Letter of conditional acceptance to a post secondary program
  • 2 letters of reference – one for community involvement and one for leading a healthy active lifestyle
  

Selection:
A selection committee will determine the recipients of this award.

Presentation:
The two recipients will receive the award at their school year end award ceremony.  Audrey's husband,
Norm Onofrychuk, and son, Nicholas Onofrychuk, sponsors of the Scholarship will be involved in the
presentation.

Edmonton Refugee & Emerging Community Awards

 
Amount:    $1,000 for one male and $1000 for one female Grade 12 student annually
 
Description:
These awards were established by Edmonton's immigrant community, to help young refugees in Edmonton access post-secondary education, achieve their educational dreams, and build a stronger community. The purpose of the award is to enhance the quality of life for refugees and members of emerging communities living in the greater Edmonton area by supporting education that would increase their ability to obtain employment in their chosen field, or pursue further educational opportunities at a post-secondary level.

Criteria (Eligibility):
The following criteria will be used in the selection process:
  • Is a recent graduate of Edmonton Catholic Schools or currently in grade 12 at an Edmonton Catholic Schools high school
  • Is a refugee, immigrant or member of an emerging community
  • Is accepted to post-secondary studies in the Edmonton area
  • Is experiencing financial need which could otherwise prevent the student from pursuing their studies
  • Has a history of positive community involvement.
     
Deadline:  June 15

Application:
A completed application must be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning by the due date above.   An application will be considered complete when it includes:
  • The applicants name, address, phone number and current high school or high school attended
  • A letter of interest indicating their financial need and positive community involvement
  • 2 letters of references – one from a teacher and one from a community member (not a relative)
  • Letter of conditional acceptance to a post-secondary program
     
Selection:
A selection committee will determine the recipients of this award.

Presentation:
The two recipients will receive the award at their school's year-end award ceremony.

Frank Schneider Educational Trust Fund

 
Amount: $500 Minimum
Description:
It is intended to assist the eligible children of District employees.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, the applicant must:
  • Be a graduate of the District
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary program with the intention of entering the field of education
  • Indicate a need for financial assistance

Deadline:   June 15
 
Application:
Submissions must be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning.  The submission will include:
  • A letter of interest and a completed application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Documentation to indicate the criteria have been met

Geraldine MacIntosh Memorial Bursary

 

Amount:

$1000 *Amount Increased from $500

Description:
The award is to be presented annually to an English as a Second Language (ESL) student who is graduating from Grade 12 and entering any post-secondary institution the following academic year.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, the applicant must:
  • Be a graduate of the District
  • Have an academic average sufficient to gain entrance to a post-secondary institution
  • Be a well-rounded student who is presently taking, or has taken, an active role in school community activities
  • Show financial need
  • Have landed immigrant status
  • Have received ESL assistance at any point in their education with the District
 
Deadline: June 15
 
Application:
The application should be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning.  The submission will include:
  • A short essay (maximum of 400 words) briefly describing:
    • Future goals
    • The impact the ESL program has had or will have in helping the student achieve his/her educational goals
    • Financial need
    • Community involvement
  • Documentation to indicate that the student has met the criteria indicated
  • Three letters of recommendation
          
Selection:
The recipient will be selected from the qualified applicants by a committee comprising representation from the District.

Presentation:
The award will be presented at the recipient's high school award ceremony.

Italian Women's Society Academic Scholarship

 

Amount:

$500

Description:
Applicant must be of Italian background (one or both parents of Italian heritage - natural or legal, or one of the grandparents of Italian heritage).

Criteria (Eligibility):
  • Applicant must be of Italian heritage (one or both parents of Italian origin - natural or legal, or one of his/her grandparents of Italian origin)
  • Applicant should be enrolled in their final year at a District high school and must have maintained an "honours" standing (80%+) in academic subjects throughout their high school career
  • Applicant should possess leadership qualities and demonstrate a willingness to serve (e.g. community.)
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a post-secondary (university) institution at the time the award is given

The selection will be made by a committee comprising representation from the District.

Presentation:
This award will be presented at the annual gala hosted by the "Italian Women's Society."
 
 
 

John and Vera Dunnigan Physical Education Scholarship

Amount:

$1000 *Amount Increased from $500

Description:
This scholarship shall recognize and honor a student graduate of the District who is studying Physical Education for the purpose of teaching.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible the applicant must
 
  • Be a graduate of the District
  • Be enrolled at a post-secondary program with the intention of teaching Physical Education
  • Indicate a need for financial assistance

Kay Krausert Award Fund

 

Amount:

 $500

Description:
The fund was established to provide a yearly scholarship to a District Grade 12 business education student for further education at a recognized post-secondary education institution.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, students must:
  • Graduate from a District high school
  • Have majored in business education (CTS) with successful completion of three grade 12 courses in the business/information processing components of CTS
  • Demonstrate a strong service commitment while attending senior high school
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary institution for further education in the area of business

Pura Scholarship

 

Amount:

 $500.00 

Description:
This scholarship is to recognize a grade 12 graduate of ECSD who will be entering a university, college or post-secondary technical institute, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts:
  • Business Education
  • Home Economics
  • Industrial arts
  • Vocational Education
  • Any technical field
        
Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, the applicant must:
  • be a graduate of Edmonton Catholic Schools
  • be enrolled in a post-secondary program, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts
        
Deadline:  June 15
 
Application:
Application form must be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning.  Submissions should include:
  • Name, address, telephone number, date of birth
  • High school(s) attended, work experience, interests and activities
  • Record of grade 12 marks

The successful applicant well be notified by letter and requested to notify of the intent to be present to receive the scholarship.

Iskotew - Acahkos (Fire Star) Bursary

 

Amount:

 Four Awards of $750.00 each

Description:
Edmonton Catholic Schools, Indigenous Learning Services designed  the Iskotew - Acahkos (Fire Star) Bursary that distinguishes our Indigenous students who demonstrate leadership and inspire others through embracing and respecting an Indigenous perspective and world view by:
  • Perservering in his/her studies despite challenges
  • Maintaining a positive outlook on his/her future opportunities and dreams
  • Providing leadership within a cultural perspective by promoting his/her heritage/culture
  • Embracing and respecting the heritage/culture of all



Award Criteria

Be enrolled full-time in their final year of high school and progressing toward graduation with plans to:
  • Enter a post-secondary institution in the fall semester
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to the community
  • Be involved in co-curricular activities
  • Maintain a good academic standing

Application Process

  • One signed reference form from an Elder, Sports Coach, Teacher, School Administrator or Indigenous Graduation Coach

Criteria (Eligibility):
  • Applicant must be of Italian heritage (one or both parents of Italian origin - natural or legal, or one of his/her grandparents of Italian origin)
  • Applicant should be enrolled in their final year at a District high school and must have maintained an "honours" standing (80%+) in academic subjects throughout their high school career
  • Applicant should possess leadership qualities and demonstrate a willingness to serve (e.g. community.)
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a post-secondary (university) institution at the time the award is given

Presentation:
This award will be presented at the annual gala hosted by the "Italian Women's Society."
 
 
 

John and Vera Dunnigan Physical Education Scholarship

Amount:

$1000 *Amount Increased from $500

Description:
This scholarship shall recognize and honor a student graduate of the District who is studying Physical Education for the purpose of teaching.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible the applicant must
 
  • Be a graduate of the District
  • Be enrolled at a post-secondary program with the intention of teaching Physical Education
  • Indicate a need for financial assistance

The submission will be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning.  Submissions should include:
  • A letter of interest and a completed application form
  • Letters of support from administrators or teachers
  • Documentation to indicate compliance with criteria 1 & 2 as stated above

Kay Krausert Award Fund

 

Amount:

 $500

Description:
The fund was established to provide a yearly scholarship to a District Grade 12 business education student for further education at a recognized post-secondary education institution.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, students must:
  • Graduate from a District high school
  • Have majored in business education (CTS) with successful completion of three grade 12 courses in the business/information processing components of CTS
  • Demonstrate a strong service commitment while attending senior high school
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary institution for further education in the area of business

Description:
This scholarship is to recognize a grade 12 graduate of ECSD who will be entering a university, college or post-secondary technical institute, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts:
  • Business Education
  • Home Economics
  • Industrial arts
  • Vocational Education
  • Any technical field
        
Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, the applicant must:
  • be a graduate of Edmonton Catholic Schools
  • be enrolled in a post-secondary program, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts
        
Deadline:  June 15
 
Application:
Application form must be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning.  Submissions should include:
  • Name, address, telephone number, date of birth
  • High school(s) attended, work experience, interests and activities
  • Record of grade 12 marks
  • Proof of registration at a post-secondary educational institution and area of study
        
Selection:
The selection and scholarship administrative committee shall select the recipient from among the applicants.

The successful applicant well be notified by letter and requested to notify of the intent to be present to receive the scholarship.

Awarded annually at the recipient's school graduation ceremony/awards day.

Iskotew - Acahkos (Fire Star) Bursary

 

Amount:

 Four Awards of $750.00 each

Description:
Edmonton Catholic Schools, Indigenous Learning Services designed  the Iskotew - Acahkos (Fire Star) Bursary that distinguishes our Indigenous students who demonstrate leadership and inspire others through embracing and respecting an Indigenous perspective and world view by:
  • Perservering in his/her studies despite challenges
  • Maintaining a positive outlook on his/her future opportunities and dreams
  • Providing leadership within a cultural perspective by promoting his/her heritage/culture
  • Embracing and respecting the heritage/culture of all



Award Criteria

Be enrolled full-time in their final year of high school and progressing toward graduation with plans to:
  • Enter a post-secondary institution in the fall semester
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to the community
  • Be involved in co-curricular activities
  • Maintain a good academic standing

Application Process

Submit the following documents to Aboriginal Learning Services:
  • Applicant essay including bio; accomplishments and future career goals
  • One signed reference form from an Elder, Sports Coach, Teacher, School Administrator or Indigenous Graduation Coach
  • Applicant resume
  • High school transcripts
