The Sacramental Education Initiative (SEI) is an initiative established by the Archbishop and Catholic school board chairs and superintendents. The aim of the Sacramental Education Initiative is threefold:

  • to ensure that sacraments are pivotal life-changing events for all Catholic children and their families,
  • to awaken them to lifelong and self-directed deepening of their Catholic faith, and
  • to start them on the road to being authentic missionary disciples.

The goal of the Sacramental Education Initiative within lifelong catechesis:

  • harmonize sacramental education and preparation across parishes, schools, and in the Archdiocese
  • engage the entire parish community in fully initiating its members, yielding
  • parents actively engaged in sacramental preparation at home and in the parish
  • Catholic schools actively engaged by deliberately connecting sacraments with the curriculum
  • parishes actively engaged through involving all of the baptized in becoming authentic missionary disciples
  • parish and school leaders actively engaged through bi-monthly meetings to collaborate on sacramental preparation

The objectives of the Sacramental Education Initiative:

  • carry out an improved, more coherent sacramental education and preparation process
  • cultivate improved parish, school, and parent communication

The Sacramental Education Initiative (SEI) began in August 2012. During the first year, research was gathered from parents, priests, pastoral assistants, principals, and teachers across the Archdiocese, province, country and world. The research was used to create the Standards for Preparing Children and Youth for the Sacraments (Standards).

In June 2013, ten parishes and their associated schools were selected to pilot the SEI for the 2013-2014 school year. These groups were diverse, and reflected the pastoral realities within the Archdiocese of Edmonton.  Along with piloting the Standards, pastors and administrators met on a bi-monthly basis, chose one or two areas of sacramental preparation to focus on, and planned clergy visits to schools.

In September 2014, twelve more parishes and their associated schools were added. They began piloting the SEI and are using the same model as the first year.

In June 2015, the Standards will be updated based on the feedback from the twenty-two (22) pilot groups.

The Archdiocese of Edmonton hopes to implement the Standards in all parishes and Catholic schools by the fall of 2015. They will have one year to adapt their approach to preparing children for sacraments. The Standards will be promulgated and become policy in the fall of 2016.
