World Teachers' Day - October 5th
“…it is a sacred privilege and an awesome responsibility to be an educator. And it may be the closest we have to a universal human vocation… To be educator is to stand on holy ground – people’s lives.
(Thomas Groome, Educating for Life, P. 34-35)
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that recognizes education as a fundamental right and established the entitlement to free, compulsory education for all children. The Canadian Teachers’ Federation has shared the theme Teachers, the heartbeat of public education to help us celebrate this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
This theme honors the work of teachers as being the essence of education, and, on the international level, highlights that students have a right to trained and qualified teachers. Thank you to all our teachers for your tremendously loving and generous work as you live out your vocation to Catholic education by helping our students grow in Christ!
Catholic Districts across the province are joining together this year to wear blue on World Teachers’ Day in support of the choice of Catholic education as part of our publicly funded school system. I encourage all members of our community to join in this movement to celebrate the distinctive, valuable work of Catholic education. Wear blue on Friday October 5 along with the blue ribbon that you will receive from our Edmonton Catholic Teachers Local! Thank you to our local for spearheading this initiative!
