Prayer for the People of Pittsburgh

Introduction: Eleven people were killed in Saturday's shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, where four police officers were among the six people wounded in the shooting . "Today, the nightmare has hit home in the city of Pittsburgh," Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said at a news conference Saturday afternoon. “It’s a very horrific crime scene; it’s one of the worst I've seen."

Today we pray for the victims and survivors of the shooting: we pray for their families and friends, and we stand in solidarity with those who face a long journey of recovery from their serious injuries and traumatic experiences.

Prayer: Let us pray: Almighty God, we come to you with open hearts and minds to pray for the victims and survivors of this senseless act of violence. We ask for peace in the city of Pittsburgh and for the Jewish community; we pray for the people of the United States; and we pray for comfort for the weary, safety for the fearful, and trust for the abandoned. Father, as we recall the holy men and women of every time and place, we turn to you during this time of grief and shock with great hope in your infinite mercy.

Through the intercession of our Most Blessed Mother, we pray together: Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
A special thank you to Sandra Talarico for preparing our prayer.
