"And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

~Mark 13:37~

Advent is upon us, and this passage from the Gospel for the First Sunday of Advent is a good reminder for us about how we should live our daily lives.  It is a call for us to be fully present to the promise of salvation that God sent to us in the person of Jesus Christ.  Advent is not just about preparing our hearts to commemorate the birth of Christ over 2000 years ago.  It is about preparing our hearts each day to receive, and, in turn, to share, the tremendous gift of God’s love that became known to us in a stable so long ago.

For Christians of the Eastern Rite, Advent began on November 15; the Roman Rite begins the season on December 3.  As we begin this journey of anticipation of the coming of Christ and experience the inevitable busy-ness of the upcoming season, I hope you find many opportunities to cultivate the inner stillness that will allow you to “keep awake” so that you are alert to the presence of Jesus in your life each day.
