St. Edmund offers Sports Academies in Hockey, Soccer and Recreation
Designed for young people at various skill levels, our Sports Academies offer students opportunities to develop and refine their physical, technical, mental and tactical skills in their chosen sport. Students enrolled in the Academies either take core academic courses in the morning and participate in the Sports Academies in the afternoon or they participate in Academy programming in the morning and receive core instruction in the afternoons.
Students in each of our academies are also involved in a variety of cross-training activities and classroom instruction.
The Sports Academies are run by qualified teachers and professional coaches. The coaches involved in the Soccer and Hockey programs have local, provincial and/or national levels of coaching and playing experience. The Soccer and Hockey Academies at St. Edmund complement the Sports Academies offered at Archbishop O'Leary High School.
Academics are the first priority for student athletes in each of our Academies. Students may be placed on probation in an academy or may not participate in academy sessions if they are not working to their full potential in the classroom. Students may also be placed on probation if they fail to comply with the expectations of their Academy.
Outcomes for physical education and health courses are taught through Sports Academy programming. In our junior high, two complementary course sections are also used for Sports Academy programming. (Essentially, the Sports Academy is the complementary course for students enrolled in it).
Students registered in Sports Academies who wish to earn a Certificate in the IB Middle Years Programme, must register in French as a Second Language for their complementary course. Please see the International Baccalaureate page for more information.
The St. Edmund Sports Academies are programs of choice. They are fully funded by fees paid by the participants.
