Christmas Break Extended for Students
December 31, 2021
The Government of Alberta has announced the Christmas break for students will be extended province-wide. At this time, students will return to class on Monday, January 10, 2022. This extended break will give school authorities time to gather additional data to assess staffing implications and the potential operational impacts of the current COVID-19 situation.
Alberta Education has cancelled January diploma exams to support high school students whose learning is disrupted by this extension. A decision will be made later in 2022 regarding April and June diploma exams.
To assist with the safe return to classes, Alberta's PPE Task Force will also deliver 8.6 million rapid tests and 16.5 million masks to schools, starting the week of January 10.
"We recognize that this extension of the Christmas break is inconvenient and very last minute for families, but we believe it is necessary," said Sandra Palazzo, ECSD Board Chair. "Our Division has been monitoring the rapid spread of the Omicron variant and is concerned about the potential impact on staffing and operations. Our administration will spend the next week updating many of our procedures, preparing for the school-wide distribution of masks and rapid test kits for students and staff, and planning for instruction starting January 10. The safety, health, and well-being of all students and staff remain our top priority. As we once again adjust to new provincial guidance, we are committed to providing a strong and consistent learning environment."
Alberta Education will provide more information on next steps late next week.
