Religious Education

All of the Schools in the Edmonton Catholic School District use a Religious Education Program that is prescribed by our Alberta Bishops and provided through the National Office for Religious Education in Ottawa. The Program ranges from Kindergarten to Grade Twelve, and offers students with an overview of our Catholic faith as well as grade specific themes.

Our School Namesake: Annunciation

The Annunciation refers to the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Annunciation of the Lord, to celebrate the announcement from the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, marking his Incarnation. Gabriel told Mary to name her son Jesus, meaning "Saviour".

The Annunciation - Luke 1:26-38

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you." But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God.

School Charism

Inspired by Mary, the Mother of God, we say YES to a life of service, action, and love.

Charism is a gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church, communicated through a particular person who gathers disciples around him or her and with whom he or she translates a bold vision into action. Charism is a living passion for whatever dimension of the life of Christ is needed now - faith, obedience, compassion, thoughtfulness, hope, contentment, determination... It is the burning desire in the heart of the founder/foundress that was alive at one period of history, living on in us, in another day and age. It is ever evolving.... it is where the reign of God is needed most. It develops from age to age and dies from age to age ... and then grows up in a new way.

The Charism Story of Annunciation Catholic Elementary IB World School

The Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation of our school.  We live according to his gospel by following the example of Mary, his mother and our mother too.  St Luke, in his gospel, calls her by name.  He calls her Mary.  We do too.  St John, in his gospel, tells us that Jesus, on the cross, gave us his mother, Mary, to be our mother too.  So, we honour her as Mother Mary.  We honour Mary because she is the first disciple of her Son, Jesus, and the model disciple who leads us to her Son and to his Church.  We honour Mary because she was the support of her Son’s Church at its beginning and is its support until the end of time.

Mary is present in our school, in us and through us, because we do the best we can to live by her virtues.   We recognize that Mary is full of grace, obedient, faithful, compassionate, thoughtful, hopeful, contented and determined.  With others who seek to follow the Lord Jesus in Mary’s way, we do our best to "think as Mary, judge as Mary, feel and act as Mary in all things.”  At Annunciation we are growing in faith together, in Mary’s way.

Inspired by Mary, the Mother of God, we say YES to a life of service, action, and love.
