French as a second language
French is one of Canada’s two official languages. The French as a second language (FSL) courses offer students important cultural, linguistic and career development opportunities.
French as a Second Language (FSL) is taught as a subject. Its overarching goal is to enable students to communicate in French in a variety situations. FSL also enables students to better understand francophone cultures in Canada and in other countries of the world.
FSL is taught 95 hours per year at the elementary and junior high levels, and 125 hours per year in senior high.
Two Sequences of FSL
- Three-Year FSL Program is intended for students who are beginning their study of French in Grade 10.
- Nine-Year FSL Program is intended for students who are beginning their study of French in Grade 4.
FSL is offered in most of our schools in grades 4-12. Please check individual school programs for more information.
