Superintendent's Message - September 2008

Christ is the key that opens all the hidden treasures of God's wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:1-9)

September brings much excitement as students and staff prepare for the challenges and rewards that come with a new school year. I welcome all the families that are new to our district and welcome back all of our students that were with us last year.My wish is that all of you have a school year that brings new friendships, is full of learning, and rewards you with the gift of Catholic education
by revealing the treasure of God's wisdom and knowledge.

This summer has been very busy as planning continues for the site blessings of our three new schools. Modular classrooms have been installed at many of our schools and major renovations have been completed throughout the school district. The planning and design of the Archbishop MacDonald High School major modernization will be completed by March 2009 with construction completed by July 2010. I am also pleased to report, that with increased support from both the provincial government and the City of Edmonton, our St. Francis Xavier Field House project is well underway. Construction of the project should begin this October with completion by December 2009.

The Board of Trustees and I have established goals for this year as follows:

  • Continue to focus on health, wellness and safety for students and staff.
  • Continue to focus on social justice and care for creation initiatives.
  • Focus on high school completion.
  • Continue to foster relationships and partnerships with external organizations.
  • Ensure that the best programming and services are offered to all students.

Our Three-Year Strategic Education Plan details our strategies for achieving our goals and can be viewed on our website at www.ecsd.net/annual_reports/about.html.

The success of our school district is a result of a dedicated and talented staff, strong parental involvement and a very supportive community all working in collaboration. Edmonton Catholic Schools strives for continuous improvement in our effort to provide the best educational experiences for our students.

This year is one of celebration as we recognize the significance of a special anniversary for the district
— 120 years of Catholic education for the Edmonton community. I am confident that we will continue our successes during the 2008-2009 school year.

Sincerely,

Joan Carr
Superintendent
