Superintendent's Message - May 2007

Mary said to the Angel: 'Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.' (Luke 1:38)

May is a special time for the students and staff of Edmonton Catholic Schools. The long winter is over and the warm days bring a joyful exuberance to all of nature around us. More significantly, May is also the month dedicated by Catholics around the world to Mary, Our Heavenly Mother.

During these days we seek in all our activities to honor the Blessed Virgin who is the Mother of God and the patron saint of our school district. She is our guide and inspiration. Mary was a strong and faithful person, true to her beliefs and accepting of motherhood as a vocation from God. She knew the joys and especially the sorrows of her calling and in her commitment and devotion, she serves as a model for all of us.

The month of May is also a good time to review the progress we have made as a district in the past school year. One of our most successful initiatives continues to be our work with balanced literacy and reading intervention. Through the leadership of the Department of Learning Support Services, all elementary, and this year, junior high schools, have received professional development training and intensive consultant support in establishing effective reading and writing strategies for all students. These research-based literacy and assessment strategies have resulted in continued improved student achievement across our school district.

In this springtime of the year, we give thanks for all our blessings and pray that Mary, our heavenly patron, will continue to assist us as we strive to fulfill our mission to the students and parents that we serve.

May God's blessing be on each of you during this special month.

Sincerely,

Joan Carr
