Superintendent's Message - March 2008

From the Office of the Superintendent

Edmonton Catholic Schools Faith Development Day on February 5 was an inspiring day that united all 3,000 employees of our District. Archbishop Richard Smith proved what a fine shepherd he is as he explained the scriptural basis for social justice and related his account working with the poor in Lima, Peru. Archbishop Smith's message was faith-filled, thought provoking and inspiring.

I am pleased to report that a one time funding announcement from the Alberta Government combined with a surplus financial position for the District in 2006/07, means additional dollars for our classrooms. The provincial government funding will translate into $54.00 in additional funding for each student, plus $97.65 per student as a result of the District's 2006/07 surplus position.

Edmonton Catholic Schools has developed a strong focus on health and wellness that targets the health and well-being of all our students. At the junior high level, this program focuses on improving levels of physical activity, providing information and samples of nutritious, healthy snack choices, educating students about mental health and well-being, and promoting substance abuse prevention. All elementary schools are implementing the provincial Daily Physical Activity Initiative of 30 minutes of activity daily during the school day.

Many schools are implementing health and wellness strategies and incorporating information to parents through the school newsletters about tips on packing a healthy lunch, hand washing, and messages to get active. The District currently has three elementary schools with a full time School Health Facilitator. The project is funded through a research initiative with the University of Alberta. The Health Facilitator is responsible for creating a school atmosphere with physical activity, encouraging healthy eating choices, and educating students and staff about creating a healthy, active school. These activities complement our District's detailed Nutrition Policy and Regulation. The complete policy and regulation can be found on the home page of our District website at www.ecsd.net.

As we continue this year's Lenten journey, may we see the goodness embodied in our lives and share that goodness with others.

Sincerely,
