Superintendent's Message - June 2010

“You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy, and your help brings pleasure forever”

The month of June can be a month of mixed feelings for students, staff members and their families as another school year/semester closes. For some, June brings tremendous change as their lives “in school” are completed, and either post-secondary opportunities or the world of work beckon. For others, June means leaving a group of cherished classmates and peers to go to another school, another grade or another teacher. As June is a time of transition for your families, I hope you find time in the “busyness” of your lives to reflect on what this transition means for your children and yourselves. We bid a fond farewell to those students who are graduating from our District, and wish them much success as they pursue further studies or career opportunities.

Recently, Edmonton Catholic Schools received the May 2010 Accountability Pillar Report. This report published in both October and May provides our District with our ‘report card’ in various areas. In all twelve areas measured in the May 2010 Report, Edmonton Catholic Schools’ performance improved significantly, improved or improvement measures were maintained – no measures declined or were of an issue. These results can be directly attributed to the wonderful learning opportunities, delivered within a Catholic environment, that are available in our District. The success of our students is due to the tremendous efforts of dedicated teachers, support staff, administrators and parents who work together to provide rich learning experiences.

We are especially proud of the improvements made in the 3-Year and 5-Year High School Completion rates for the District, as evidenced by a decrease in the number of students who drop out of school and a larger number of at-risk students receiving both encouragement and the supports necessary to succeed.
