Read-In Edmonton 2007
October 1 - 5
RReading: A Moveable Feast / La lecture: un rÉgal pour l'esprit.

Edmonton READ-IN

The purpose of READ IN 2007 is to create a greater awareness of theimportance of reading. Historically, the event has successfully promoted theschool as an important place for the development of lifelong literacy.

READ IN Week: October 1 - 5, 2007
The goal of READ IN Week is to involve as many individuals as possible in oneor more READ IN events during the week of October 1 - 5, 2007. A READ INevent can take place anywhere - in the school's READ IN centre, in thecommunity or at home. A READ IN event is any occasion when participantsmake a deliberate choice to read or to be read to for pleasure.

Theme: Reading: A Moveable Feast / La lecture : un régal pour l'esprit For the 18th annual READ In Week, the theme A Moveable Feast/ La lecture:un régal pour l'esprit, is inspired by Hemingway's book, A Moveable Feast. Init, he speaks about the remarkable people, places and moments that he wasenriched by as a writer in the 1920s in Paris. He opens our eyes as readers tothe power of imagining life as a feast. Each reading moment is an invitationto travel to a new setting, meet unique people, share in celebrations and torevel in the new, even the impossible. The events that we take part in thisweek, including guest readings, story telling experiences, plays, films andspeakers create a menu of choices to savor for this time and beyond.

Ideas for sharing this theme with students include:

  • considering the way characters' gifts in various areas (music, art, sports,writing and so on) are nurtured through special people, places and events;
  • observing the way actual feasts of food (Thanksgiving, Christmas,Birthdays) typically occur at important moments in our lives and reinforcethe importance of nurturing our relationships with family and friends;
  • discovering the power of special places and times in our lives andidentifying the factors that make such places and times momentous;
  • realizing that we grow personally and spiritually through the collection ofspecial moments, no matter how big or small, that contribute to who weare and who we want to become in our lives.
