Improving Student Achievement in Mathematics

Secondary

  • Summative Year-end Exams: There will be year-end exams in Mathematics 10 Pure, Mathematics 20 Pure, Mathematics 10 Applied and Mathematics 20 Applied, Grade 7 Mathematics and Grade 8 Mathematics.
  • All summative year-end exams will be analyzed centrally and used to improve data-driven instruction at the school level.
  • New curriculum implementation will begin Mathematics 7 in September 2008, Mathematics 8 in September 2009, and Mathematics 9 in September 2010.
  • The AISI project Pathways to Learning through Formative Assessment providing professional development on formative assessment in mathematics will be ongoing and will occur at school sites.

Elementary

  • District Exams: All Grade 2 and Grade 5 students will write a district mathematics exam. Assisting schools with going deeper into the analysis of the data provided by these exams will be a focus.
  • Teachers will have the opportunity to examine the quality of mathematics teaching and learning through a series of courses constructed to help teachers gain both mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical skills - what has been termed as pedagogical content knowledge in recent research.
