News Release - January 30th, French Immersion Community Consultation proposal

Edmonton Catholic Schools is looking at different ways to enhance and grow our French Immersion programs. We are currently considering two proposals that will have an impact on your child's kindergarten to grade 12 French Immersion educational experiences:

  1. To request funding from the province to construct a single-track French Immersion junior/senior high school and outreach centre in the Meadows community at 17th Street and 23rd Avenue.  This proposed new school would replace the current J.H. Picard School located at 7055 - 99 Street.  Alternative elementary French Immersion student accommodations would be considered within the current J.H. Picard elementary attendance area.

This proposed new school would be built across the street from the Meadows recreation centre and public library which are currently under construction.   The new school would be built with a theatre and proximity to the recreation centre would create the opportunity for sports academies such as hockey and soccer.

  2. To phase out the senior high school French Immersion programs at Archbishop O’Leary (8760-132 Ave) and St. Francis Xavier (9250-163 St) High Schools and replace these programs with a senior high school French Immersion program at Archbishop MacDonald High School (14219-109 Ave).

Currently, St. Francis Xavier and Archbishop O’Leary School’s partial French Immersion programs offer only French Language Arts and Social Studies taught in French.  The proposed new French Immersion program at Archbishop MacDonald would include the following subjects taught in French:  French Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics.

Frère Antoine School proposal

Edmonton Catholic Schools is considering an innovative partnership with the City of Edmonton to build a new school for École J.H. Picard in the Silver Berry district at 17th Street and 23rd Avenue. The new school would accommodate Grades 7 – 12 French Immersion programs and would also be home to a community theatre.
