Edmonton Catholic Schools is the first district in Canada to offer
all three fully authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes.
IB programs offer comprehensive and balanced curricula. Strong
emphasis is placed on international understanding and responsible
citizenship. The goal of the IB program is to develop students
who are critical and compassionate thinkers, and are informed participants
in local and world affairs, while respecting the variety of cultures
and attitudes that makes for the richness of life.
Primary Years Programme
The primary years program is designed for students in kindergarten through grade 6. It engages
students in a uniquely international program focused on the total growth of the developing child,
touching hearts as well as minds. It embraces a structured in-depth inquiry into curriculum that
complements the Alberta Learning Program of Studies.
Middle Years Programme
The middle years program provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills for students aged 11-16 (grades 7-10). This four year program begins in Junior High and culminates in grade 10 in High School. The MYP has three fundamental concepts developing holistic learning, intercultural awareness and communication.

Fine Arts
Where teaching music, visual arts, drama and dance in an expert integrated curricular experience enhances
an overall Catholic Education. To truly benefit from arts education children need to be immersed in the
discipline and practice the art. All students have gifts and we want to provide them with increased
opportunity to realize their potential in the fine arts.

Professional
Learning School
This school makes a difference for children by serving those who shape their learning. The administrators, in
collaboration with the professional staff and parent community, place "Children First" in all decisions which
impact student learning. There is a shared belief that all who affect student learning must continually improve
their own knowledge, skills and attitudes to ensure high levels of academic achievement for all learners.

the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in a higher level of learning.

Advanced Placement (Senior High)
The Advanced Placement Program, using the Alberta Program of Studies, will prepare students to acquire the
knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in a higher level of learning.

Personalized Self-Directed
Learning (P.S.D.L.)
PSDL
is an opportunity to provide students and parents an alternative
that is better suited to the changing nature of students, curriculum
and society.
The Personalized Self-Directed Learning Program was first introduced
by J. Lloyd Trump in a book entitled 'A School for Everyone'.
Dr. Trump's work evolved into the Model Schools Project in 1971
at which time Bishop Carroll High School in Calgary became one
of the schools in the project. In the past few years a number
of Canadian schools have adopted this program. They have come
together to form the Canadian Coalition of Self-Directed Learning
(CCSDL) and they meet regularly to share ideas and concerns,
solve problems, initiate staff exchanges and develop common curriculum.
The Personalized Self-Directed
Learning Program is solidly based on the following pillars:
- Personalized Scheduling
- Teacher Advisors
- Supported Independent Study
- Continuous Progress

International
Languages
The intention of the Language Focus Program at St. Francis Xavier is to provide language learning opportunities in three languages other than English with a focus on cultural experiences as well as language use in the business community. These courses would be offered within the regular high school
program but would require commitments on the part of the students beyond regular school hours.
Proficiency in a second language of the student's choice as well as enrollment in a related CTS course
would be required by all students wishing to participate in the program.

the scientific process.
